Free Lego Build Events Are a Thing, But When's the Next One?

When someone says “free Legos,” it’s like sending the Bat Signal to parents and caregivers everywhere. In October, Barnes & Noble is hosted a free Lego Build event (also known as a Make & Take) in select stores. Dates and times varied by location, but the Halloween-themed Lego kit was the same. It was a 113-piece Lego Jack-o’-Lantern and there was no purchase necessary. You can’t get cheaper Lego deals than absolutely free.

However, remember when we mentioned the words free Legos signaling parents everywhere? These Lego events are popular, and only held once or twice a year at Barnes & Noble, meaning space and quantities are limited. Stores require or strongly recommend you visit in-store or call them in advance to sign up, securing a spot for your kid.

However, Lego stores offer free Build events pretty regularly. In fact, more frequently than, say, Barnes & Noble. And these are also incredibly popular, meaning when you know the date and time, you wanna get there early.

Because the free Lego Build events typically include sets that aren’t available for purchase, it’s hard to put an exact cost on them. However, 113-piece Lego sets typically range in price from $9.99 – $14.99. And let us remind you, you’re getting a 100% discount on it when the Lego event is free.

Select Barnes & Noble locations hosted free Lego Build events in-store on Saturday, Oct. 14 or Sunday, Oct. 15. No purchase was necessary.

This Barnes & Noble Lego Build event was absolutely free, with no purchase necessary. However, the events didn’t happen at every store, and, unfortunately, B&N didn’t provide a single list of all participating locations.

When we report on the next free B&N Lego event, click on the Stores & Events tab at the top left of the Barnes & Noble homepage. From there you can search by zip code, store name, or event name to see if any of the B&N locations near you are participating, as well as the date and time of their particular event.

Sign up in advance, either by calling your participating Barnes & Noble or visiting in-store ahead of the free Lego event. Supplies and space are very limited.

We cannot stress enough how popular anything involving free Legos is, so it’s imperative you sign up for your local event in advance. Some Barnes & Noble locations allow you to call them to secure a spot. Others require you visit in-store ahead of the event to sign up. Whichever method works best at your location, sign up as early as possible. There’s only one Lego kit provided per child registered.

Attendees at the Oct. 2023 B&N event got to build a free 113-piece Lego Jack-o’-Lantern.

As we approached Halloween, it was no real surprise the Barnes & Noble event went with a spirited Lego kit. The promotional kits were 113-piece Jack-o’-Lanterns with customizable faces and recommended for ages 6+. No two creations had to be exactly alike.

On average, 113-piece Lego kits range in price from $9.99 – $14.99, so we expect this kit to be similar in value.

What exactly is a Lego Build or Make & Take event, anyway?

These events, which Barnes & Noble runs a couple times of year, are in-store opportunities for kids to receive free, promotional Lego kits that they can build in a group setting. They typically run about two hours. Of course, you don’t need to stay that long.

The Lego store also runs free events from time to time.

If you prefer to do your free builds at the mothership — the actual Lego store — they also run free events on occasion. Now there’s no real rhyme or reason to when these are scheduled. For example, in Aug. 2023 they hosted a free Creative Workshop with a Lego Dots theme.

Much like the B&N Lego events, you had to sign up in advance, but participation was free. Kids were allowed to free build (that means not follow a specific Lego blueprint) with the Dots and decorate them, then take their creation home.

Past Lego Make It & Take It events include:

  • Lego Bunny
  • Lego Red Brick
  • Lego Trophy
  • Lego Friends Skate Ramp
  • Lego My Starry Night
  • Lego Frankenstein’s Monster
  • Lego Space Shuttle

Is there an age limit for a Lego store event?

No, there’s no age limit for these events. However, Lego notes the age group for which the models are best suited.
