Big news: Amazon just dropped a new grocery brand, Saver, as well as some new grocery discounts (25% - 50% off) for Prime members. The new private label brand and the discounts are available through Amazon grocery delivery and at Amazon Fresh stores (which has 40 locations across the U.S.).

Amazon describes its new Saver brand as "no-frills," and prices start at $0.69, with most just-the-basics staples priced under $5. If you have a Prime account and live in an area served by Amazon Fresh, you can browse the new Saver line here. So far, it's got your basic spices, pizza sauce, syrup, crackers, cookies, etc.

There's one caveat, though. You need to live in an Amazon Fresh delivery area. Enter your ZIP code here to check if you're in an Amazon Fresh delivery area. If you are, you can shop Saver.

Amazon dropped a new budget grocery line with special discounts to compete with Walmart and Aldi.

Grocery price inflation over the past several years has shifted American shoppers to discount chains like Aldi and Walmart.

Not to be outdone by their competitors, Amazon is making the following moves to make budget-conscious shoppers feel more seen:

The new Amazon Saver brand launched Sept. 10, 2024, but not all Amazon shoppers can get it.

amazon-saver-groceries-official-media-1

This private-label brand launched Sept. 10, and it's available to some shoppers ordering groceries via Amazon Fresh, Amazon's grocery delivery service. It's also on shelves at Amazon Fresh stores, which are few and far between (see locations). You do not have to be Prime member to get it, but Prime members get an extra 10% off the Saver line.

The one thing you do need, however, is to live in a delivery area served by Amazon Fresh. Enter your ZIP code here to see if you're in a delivery area. If you're not, you can't order Saver items online. Saver is part of the Amazon Fresh family and can therefore be delivered only to those in Amazon Fresh delivery areas.

Even if you have Prime, it doesn't necessarily mean you can order Amazon Fresh, so be sure to check. A recent press release revealed that Amazon Fresh grocery delivery is available in more than 3,500 U.S. cities. That may seem like a lot, but plenty of places still aren't covered -- KCL's HQ in Boise, Idaho, for example!

Saver is not Amazon's first private label grocery brand (they also have Aplenty, Happy Belly, and more). Saver, however, is the lowest-priced line, with most items under $5 and a few under $1. We're also seeing Amazon coupons for some of the items, which will bring the prices down by as much as 20%.

Prime members get extra grocery discounts.

Amazon has tweaked its Prime benefits to offer extra grocery discounts to its members. Prime costs $139 a year, and Amazon charges delivery fees for grocery orders under $100. To inflation-weary shoppers, that might make Amazon grocery delivery seem like a luxury they can't afford.

Likely in a move to keep those shoppers, Amazon just announced they'll offer the following:

  • The same 10% off Amazon private-label brands they've always offered to Prime members. This isn't a new benefit, but Amazon has confirmed Saver will be included in this discount.

  • 25% off 1,200 grocery and household items from various brands for Prime members. This roster of 1,200 will rotate regularly, with no promo code necessary. Prime members will see the discount in their carts. To see the discounted items, Prime members can view Prime-exclusive grocery discounts.

  • Weekly 50% off discounts on eight to 15 grocery items. Items will rotate each week and will include produce, protein, and pantry items, no promo code needed. Prime members will see the discount in their carts. To see the discounted items, Prime members can view Prime-exclusive grocery discounts.

In addition to the new Saver line and special discounts, there are more ways to save on Amazon groceries. Remember, you need to live in an area served by Amazon Fresh delivery to get these offers.

Prime members get free delivery with orders of $100 or more.

Prime members pay less for delivery than non-members. And unlike non-members, those who pay for Prime can get free delivery on orders of $100 or more. Here's the breakdown for Amazon Fresh Delivery fees:

  • Prime members pay $6.95 for orders between $50 - $100 and $9.95 for orders under $50.

  • Non-Prime members will pay between $7.95 and $13.95 (based on basket size and the delivery window you select). There's no option for free delivery.

You can arrange to pick up your order for no additional charge, regardless of your membership status, if you live near an Amazon Fresh store location.

Prime members can save on delivery fees with an Amazon Grocery subscription.

Prime members who order Amazon Fresh delivery at least once a month can benefit from Amazon's $9.99/month grocery delivery susbcription. You can get unlimited free grocery delivery on orders over $35 for Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods, plus various local grocery and specialty Amazon.com retailers.

Registered EBT users can also sign up for this delivery service for $4.99 per month.

If you're not sure this subscription is right for you, Amazon offers a free 30-day trial.

Prime members have access to exclusive coupons and grocery deals on Amazon Fresh.

Amazon is also showering Prime members with a few other exclusive deals at Amazon Fresh. Prime members can enjoy deals on everyday groceries online and in store (look for the blue sign "Prime member deal").

Plus, Prime members can save with exclusive weekly in-store coupons (you tap the coupon to add to your promo wallet). Here are a few examples:

  • Save 20% on $50+ purchase

  • Save 10% on Laundry Detergent

  • Save 10% on Fresh Pork

  • Save $2 on The Original Cakerie Layer Cakes

  • Save $3 when you spend $15+ on Our Brands

  • Save 15% on Bottled Water Packs

To use your Amazon Promo wallet, click a promo link in online Amazon ads or social media posts, or scan a QR code on store signage or a physical coupon. Once you click the link or scan, the promo will automatically load to your Promo Wallet. You'll get a notification that it was successfully added. When shopping in store, your promo will automatically apply to your order.

Prime members who pay with an Amazon Visa earn 5% back.

Prime members who pay with an Amazon Prime Visa when shopping Amazon Fresh will earn 5% back on their purchases. This is also true for Whole Foods as well.

While you can earn Amazon reward points at Amazon Fresh (and Whole Foods), you can only redeem them for purchases at Amazon.

Amazon Fresh Store Locations

Amazon Fresh stores are few and far between in the U.S. But if you prefer an in-store shopping experience and want to take advantage of the Saver line and Prime grocery discounts, here's where you can shop in person.

Order from other grocery delivery services if Amazon Fresh isn't a fit for you (or doesn't serve your area).

A woman pulling groceries out of Walmart reusable grocery bags.

If you’re not thrilled about paying more for a Prime membership, Amazon Fresh delivery, or you live in an area without Amazon Fresh delivery or stores, there are lots of grocery delivery services that might work better for your household.

Walmart+

Even as a Prime member with access to Amazon Fresh back when it offered free delivery for $35 orders, I’ve often used Walmart+. I find the prices at Walmart are often much cheaper, and they typically deliver super quickly because of my location. It’s $98 per year (which averages out to just $8.16 per month), and the minimum order for free delivery is just $35.

Thrive Market

Another popular option is Thrive Market, which has an annual membership fee of $59.95. The membership gets you access to lower-priced grocery items, including tons of healthy options. Delivery and shipping are free for orders over $49.

Costco

Costco members can get free delivery from the store on orders of $100 or more, as long as they fall within the delivery radius. Non-members can even take advantage of delivery by going through Instacart, although it’s a bit more expensive as you’ll need to pay the Instacart service fees.

Instacart and Shipt

Services like Instacart and Shipt let you buy from a variety of local stores, so you can pay for one membership but order from multiple retailers based on what you need. Instacart Express is $99 per year ($8.25 per month), with free delivery plus a 1.9% service fee on orders over $35. Shipt is $99 per year ($8.25 per month) with a $35 minimum for free shipping, but you can also use Shipt without a membership and pay $9.99 per delivery. Note that Target Circle 360 members get free delivery on Shipt orders of $35 or more.
