Wedding cakes cost an average of $500, which means anything under that might be considered a steal. One of our favorite hacks for finding a cheap wedding cake is to skip the niche bakeries and head right to the grocery store.

Grocery store bakeries have some pretty sweet deals on wedding cakes. For example, a 2-tier wedding cake from Walmart starts at just $68!

To help guide you to the standout deals, we compared all the top grocery store bakeries to find the best prices on 2-tier cakes, 3-tier cakes, and sheet cakes. Plus we looked at the customizable options and special dietary needs that may help sway your decision.

1. Pay just $68 for a 2-tier wedding cake from Walmart ($1.06 per serving).

The Walmart bakery area

Walmart has some gorgeous 2-tier wedding cakes for $68 – $74, depending on the filling you choose. If you upgrade to a 3-tier cake at Walmart, prices start at $160.

But back to the 2-tier cheap wedding cake option at Walmart. The first tier consists of a 10-inch round cake, and the top tier is a 6-inch round cake, making a total of 64 servings. They have a nice variety of standard designs you can choose from, like Diamonds and Roses and Cascading Florals, or discuss your own idea with a cake decorator at your local Walmart. For all tiered cakes at Walmart, you’ll need to give them notice five to seven days in advance.

Need more servings than 64 total? Order a sheet cake to match your 2-tiered cake design. Half-sheet cakes from Walmart start at $34.96 and serve an additional 48 guests.

Walmart also offers free curbside pickup, which you’ll probably want to ensure the cake makes its way to your car safely. Or you can pay for Walmart Delivery or Instacart to have it delivered for an extra fee, depending on your location.

TIP: Try to avoid mentioning the word “wedding” when you order a custom white cake from anywhere. Because “wedding cakes” notoriously cost a lot, “custom white cakes” may cost less — if you catch my drift. So try skipping the word “wedding” altogether next time you call to ask about ordering a custom white cake.

2. Choose a 3-tier wedding cake from Sam’s Club for $73 ($1.11 per serving).

Depending on what flavors and decorations you choose, plan to spend around $72.98 for a simple 3-tier wedding cake from Sam’s Club. It’ll serve up to 66 people, but you can add additional sheet cakes to match your design.

Half-sheet cakes from Sam’s Club feed up to 48 additional guests and cost $20.98 each.

That means if you were to purchase a 3-tier wedding cake from Sam’s Club, plus an additional sheet cake, you could serve 114 guests for $93.96 ($0.82 per serving).

With Sam’s Club custom cakes, give at least five to seven days’ notice — but preferably more if you go with the 3-tier option.

3. Get a wedding sheet cake from Costco and pay as low as $0.48 per serving.

Costco doesn’t make fancy-tiered wedding cakes, but they do make delicious, cheap custom cakes that can be cut up in the kitchen for guests. And you really can’t beat their price for a cheap wedding cake.

Get a 10-inch cake decorated with your custom design for $15.99 at Costco. You can use that to cut in front of your guests, and it’ll serve 16 people. Then order a few sheet cakes to keep in the kitchen to be cut up for guests. Half-sheet cakes at Costco are $18.99 and serve 48 guests.

If you purchase two half-sheet cakes plus a 10-inch round cake to cut in front of guests, you can end up serving 112 guests for just $53.97 — that’s just $0.48 per serving — with cheap custom cakes from Costco.

You’ll need to order over the phone or in person with Costco custom cakes. Also plan to order at least 48 hours in advance.

4. Get the most flavor and filling options with Publix wedding cakes.

The bakery section inside a Publix store

Publix custom wedding cakes need four weeks of advance notice, but Publix will give you a free wedding cake tasting so you can be sure about what you order.

And that’s a good thing, because the Publix Bakery has the most flavor combos to choose from out of all the grocery store wedding cakes we researched. Cake flavors include vanilla, chocolate, a vanilla and chocolate combo, and confetti. They also have 13 types of filling including guava and dulce de leche.

Even though Publix has some pretty impressive wedding cake designs, keep in mind that they’re the most spendy option on this list. Depending on your flavor and design choices, a 3-tier wedding cake from Publix can start at $300. Since it feeds up to 100 guests, that’s around $3 a serving.

A plus for Publix is that they can deliver the cake on your big day, which is a step up from Instacart delivery. The Publix delivery fee will depend on how close you are to the nearest Publix store.

5. Find vegan wedding cake options at Whole Foods.

If you or your guests are vegan, try a vegan vanilla or chocolate wedding cake with vegan frosting from Whole Foods.

You can order the vegan cake in a full-sheet cake size to serve 64 guests with prices starting at $152.99 ($2.39 per serving).

Pickup is free, but delivery fees start at $9.95.
