Gardeners, make a note on your springtime calendar for this freebie (as long as you live near a Fred Meyer store). We predict the next Fred Meyer Fuchsia Saturday will happen on April 12, 2025, for one day only. During this event, shoppers who make any plant purchase get free potting soil. We did the math and that's about $25 worth of savings.

This freebie obviously draws heavy crowds, and soil supplies tend to run out early. It makes sense, considering growers go crazy for gardening sales because the cost of mulch, flowers, and other garden supplies can really add up.

So, what time should you get to your local Fred Meyer? And do you have to buy their fuchsia plants to get the deal? (Nope, you don’t!) We’ll get into all the deets right here so you know what to expect for the next Fuchsia Saturday in 2025. Because what's better than some more greenery in your home? More green in your wallet.

Fred Meyer Fuchsia Saturday is a once-a-year, daylong event when you get free potting soil with a plant purchase.

Fred Meyer Fuchsia Saturday has been going on for years and is a popular annual event for gardeners. That’s because, on this day, shoppers get free potting soil with any plant purchase at Fred Meyer stores. The event almost always ends early because they run out of free soil. Although it's called Fuchsia Saturday, participants don't need to buy fuchsia plants to enjoy the offer.

KCL predicts the next Fred Meyer Fuchsia Saturday will happen on April 12, 2025.

Fred Meyer hasn't announced their 2025 Fuchsia Saturday dates yet, but KCL predicts the event will be Saturday, April 12, 2025 (7 a.m. local time).

How do we make our prediction?

The Fuchsia Saturday planting event has taken place on a Saturday morning in April pretty much every year since 1991.

The most recent event kicked off at 7 a.m. on April 13, 2024, at all Fred Meyer locations with a garden center. Although the event has jumped around in April over the years, we predict the next Fuchsia Saturday event will once again happen on Saturday, April 12, 2025. Here's when the event occurred over the last few years:

  • April 13, 2024

  • April 15, 2023

  • April 9, 2022

  • April 10, 2021

Why is it called Fuchsia Saturday?

Even though the event is named for the fuchsia plant — a perennial with brightly colored, tube-shaped blossoms — you don’t have to buy a fuchsia during the event to get your free soil.

In 2023, they sold fuchsia starts (aka baby plants) in a 3-inch pot for as low as $0.89 (with your reward card). In 2021, the same-size fuchsia plants went for $0.99. The list price for fuchsias increased to $1.19 in 2024.

You have to use your Fred Meyer reward card to get the ($1.09 in 2024) sale price. But that reward card will come in handy when you learn all the best ways to coupon at Fred Meyer.

How do I get free potting soil?

With the purchase of any plant (you’ll show your receipt as proof), Fred Meyer will supply you with free Black Gold Potting Soil. Yep, 100% free. But you don't get to take home the bag itself. Instead, you’ll bring your own pots or planters from home, and they’ll fill them up for you on the spot.

I’ve confirmed with a Fred Meyer associate that each shopper can bring up to eight planters in total, and the planters or pots can measure up to 12 inches across. They'll even plant your flowers in the pots for you.

TIP: The free soil deal is only good while supplies last, so you’ll want to get there bright and early. Stores often run out of soil by 9:30 a.m. due to high demand.

Buy a plant under $1 to get the most bang for your buck.

Since the free potting soil comes with proof of any plant purchase on Fuchsia Saturday, why spend more than you have to? Typically, the fuchsia plants are the cheapest option at just a little less than a dollar, so try to pick up one of those to secure the freebie.

Just note that this deal only works for live plants in the outdoor garden center. Seeds, or indoor plants, or cut flowers that you purchase inside the store won't count towards the free soil.

TIP: Fuchsia plants do well in hanging baskets and can also attract hummingbirds.

Bring eight of your own planters to fill and you’ll get $19 worth of free soil!

To really maximize this freebie, bring eight of your own pots or planters from home (that’s the limit they allow). And also make sure all your pots are 12 inches in diameter (again, we’re taking things to the max here).

Filling up all eight of your 12-inch pots would take about 75.5 liters of soil, based on my calculations with this handy Bonnie Plants soil estimator.

Since each bag of Black Gold Potting Soil (Fred Meyer, reg. $18.99) cost $0.33/liter at Fred Meyer before sales, that means you can get up to $25 worth of potting soil for free!

TIP: Ask if they can fill your pots or planters all the way to the top, as the soil will settle a little over time. Some locations may even offer to do the planting for you if staffing allows.
