We Tried 16 Receipt-Scanning Apps, and These Save You the Most Money

Spending money is much more enjoyable when you get rewarded for it, which is why I always use receipt apps when I’m out shopping. Receipt-scanning apps like Fetch Rewards are pretty straightforward, which keeps things easy. You scan receipts for points or rewards and then redeem them for online gift cards, actual cash, or other perks.

In 2024, a lot of these apps don’t even require you to upload a receipt anymore. You can get the same benefits with minimal effort by linking your credit card or store loyalty account. Let’s take an in-depth look at some of the best options around today.

When you download the Fetch app be sure to use the code KCL to receive 1,000 points for free.

Download The Krazy Coupon Lady app for more money-saving tips, deals, and coupons.

1. Use Ibotta to link loyalty accounts or scan receipts.

You can link store loyalty cards to Ibotta, which means you don’t have to scan your receipt at all. You totally can, but it’s not required if your loyalty accounts are linked.

If you’re using a linked store loyalty account, make sure you select Ibotta offers in the Ibotta app before you shop — otherwise they won’t get applied.

If you choose to scan your receipt instead, it’s the usual drill. Shop, tap the products in Ibotta that match what you bought, then scan your receipt. Done.

You can cash out through PayPal, direct deposit, or a gift card.

KCL TIP: Our Ibotta coupons page is great for keeping up with the latest offers.

2. Earn digital gift cards with any receipt through Fetch Rewards.

fetch-rewards-app-scan-receipt-01-feature-crop-3x2

Fetch Rewards allows you to rack up points by scanning any receipt into the Fetch app. You scan receipts from clothing retailers, fast-food restaurants and more and earn 25 points per receipt. The following can earn you more points depending on current offers:

  • Grocery stores

  • Supermarkets

  • Club wholesalers

  • Wholesale product distributors

  • Home improvement/hardware stores

  • Pet stores

  • Liquor stores

  • Convenience stores

  • Gas stations

You can also earn rewards points for buying specific brand-name products — particularly from the grocery section. There’s a referral bonus when you convert your friends into Fetch users too.

You can redeem Fetch Rewards points for gift cards starting at 3,000 points. Redemption value varies, but one example is a $3 Amazon gift card for 5,000 points. The first gift card you claim must be worth $10 or more, but after that you’ll unlock $3 and $5 gift card options.

Use the code KCL to receive 1,000 free points.

3. Get freebies as a new member with TopCashback.

TopCashback pays you for purchases made online through select merchants.

TopCashback also offers deals for new members — like money off a Stanley tumbler, your next Target shopping trip, or your next visit to Walmart. Note that offers vary.

Cash back is reflected on your TopCashback account within one week, but you can’t actually take the money out until the retailer’s return policy period is over. Once that happens, you can transfer your cash-back balance to your bank account or PayPal account.

Another option is to cash out via a Virtual Visa Prepaid Card or an American Express Reward Card (you can get this one as either a physical card or a virtual card).

KCL TIP: Before you read on, be sure to bookmark the KCL Freebie Deals page to stay informed about all the deals.

4. Bought any physical product? Scan for cash-back points with ReceiptJar.

If you buy almost any physical product, you can use ReceiptJar to upload it and get paid. There are a few exceptions. For example, you can’t book a hotel and then claim that you bought the hotel room. That receipt won’t be accepted. Neither will receipts for things like plane or train tickets. You must submit your receipt within seven days of purchase.

The amount each receipt earns depends on your spend:

  • 5 points if you spend $10 or less.

  • 10 points if you spend $10.01 - $50.

  • 15 points if you spend $50.01 - $100.

  • 20 points if the receipt total is more than $100.

Each point is worth half a cent-ish depending on how long you wait to cash out, so 200 points usually equals $1. There are also opportunities to earn bonus points in the app.

Once you’ve built up 1,000 points, you can redeem for $5. Or you can hang onto your balance until it’s built up a little more — you’ll get a discount for higher amounts. For example, a $100 redemption only costs 19,000 points instead of 20,000.

It can take anywhere from 5 to 10 business days for you to see your redemption reflected in your PayPal account. (You can also choose to have your points converted to a gift card.)

5. Earn cash back, sweepstakes entries, and more with Receipt Hog.

With Receipt Hog, uploading receipts from different types of stores will get you different reward incentives. You might get sweepstakes entries or a wheel spin, but the receipt rewards we’re going to focus on today are the ones that earn you “coins.” Generally speaking, if a store sells consumer goods, they’re a store that will earn you coins when you upload your receipts.

Here’s how much you can expect to earn based on your spend:

  • 5 coins if you spend $10 or less.

  • 10 coins if you spend $10.01 - $50.

  • 15 coins if you spend $50.01 - $100.

  • 20 coins if you spend $100 or more.

Once you’ve built up 1,000 coins, you can redeem them for your choice of an Amazon or Visa eGift card — or you can cash out via PayPal. Receipt Hog coins get more valuable the longer you let them build up. Here are the redemption values:

  • $5 for 1,000 coins

  • $15 for 2,900 coins

  • $25 for 4,300 coins

  • $40 for 6,500 coins

KCL TIP: Earnings and redemption with Receipt Hog are very similar to ReceiptJar.

6. Checkout 51 gives you cash back regardless of where you shop.

dollar-tree-app-phone-hacks-checkout51-offers-kcl-model

Checkout 51 works just like the other receipt apps: tap the offers and scan your receipt through the app.

Once your account balance reaches $20, you can cash out. Cashing out isn’t automatic when you hit $20, though. You’ll have to tell Checkout 51 you want your money, whether that’s via PayPal or mailed paper check.

KCL TIP: Bummer alert! There are some manufacturer coupons you just can’t stack with Checkout 51. Read the coupon fine print on all offers before you set your heart on coupon stacking. While it’s permissible by default, it’s not always allowed.

7. Earn Swagbucks for uploading your receipts to Tada — then trade them in for gift cards.

Tada rewards you for uploaded grocery store receipts specifically. You get points for uploading any receipt from these stores, but you can earn extra by taking advantage of specific product offers. There’s no set amount of days you have to upload, but you do have to upload before specific product offers are retired. That happens every Wednesday at 11:59 p.m.

Tada is owned by Swagbucks, so your Tada points will be issued as SB points. Swagbucks is a legit company, but it can take a while for your SB points to build up high enough to redeem for gift cards.

8. Get in-store cash-back offers with the Rakuten app.

Yes, you can get cash back with Rakuten for both online shopping and in-store purchases.

While you’re shopping in a qualifying store, tap on the offer in the Rakuten app. The app will ask you to link your credit or debit card to the offer. Use that same card to pay for the item, and you get your cash back added to your Rakuten account.

It can take a few hours or days for your cash back to show up in your account, depending on when the store confirms your purchase. Rakuten sends you an email letting you know your cash back is in your account.

You can cash out once your account reaches at least $5. Payments come in a paper check or via your PayPal account once per quarter.

9. Redeem your points for actual cash with the Dosh app.

Someone holding their phone displaying the Dosh app home screen

Dosh connects to your credit or debit card so you can earn points for shopping or dining out at thousands of retailers and restaurants. You download the Dosh app and link your credit card, debit card, Jelli account, or Venmo account.

Then you just shop or dine out as you normally would. If any place you buy something from is partnered with Dosh, you get cash back deposited automatically and immediately into your Dosh account, no receipt scanning required.

You can cash out at $15. The best part is that you earn actual cash back for your purchases. Just tap your money and transfer it to your PayPal or Venmo account.

10. Get money just for walking in the store with the Shopkick app.

Unlike other receipt apps, you actually don’t have to scan receipts or make a purchase to earn money with Shopkick, but you’ll get more points (kicks) if you do. If you allow location services in the app, you can earn kicks just for walking into a store. You can also earn kicks for scanning a product in a store without even buying it.

If you’re shopping online, you can earn kicks that way too. If you download the Shopkick app, you can earn even more kicks by watching product videos.

Kicks don’t translate into cash money, but they can be redeemed for eGift cards or PayPal credits. You can cash out for a $2 gift card with as little as 500 kicks. Shopkick is actually how I earned a free $25 Target gift card.

11. Get cash back when your friends shop with the Fluz app.

receipt-apps-fluz-checkout-2021

The Fluz app pays you to shop a few ways. The most common way to earn (10% cash back) is by making a qualified gift card purchase through their app. When you check out at a participating store, you buy a digital gift card for that store through the Fluz app for the exact amount of your total. Then you pay with that digital gift card.

Another way to earn is through Boosts activities like signing up or hitting a milestone which can earn you 25% cash back. To earn up to 50% cash back, you'll need to participate in a Fluz Party (a live cash-back event at retailers like Sephora, Walmart, Wayfair, Delta Airlines, and more). The more people that join and purchase during the party, the greater the cash back you can earn. For example, here's a look at a couple of past Fluz Parties:

  • Jamba Juice: 747 people unlocked 50% cash back.

  • Uber: 2061 people unlocked 18% cash back.

All three of these actions get you points which you redeem for — you guessed it — more gift cards. You can also redeem your points for cash back in your PayPal, Venmo, bank account, or a virtual debit card.

Here’s where Fluz gets interesting, though. Once you refer friends via the "Get $5" icon (upper right corner of the app's homescreen) and they spend $25 on Fluz, you'll also earn cash back on their purchases.

So get busy creating your own shopping network and make some money!

12. Earn cash every time you drive by a partner store with Pogo. (And get rewards for uploading your receipts too.)

pogo-app-phone-model-kcl

Like some of the other apps on this list, you don’t actually need to upload receipts to get rewards from Pogo. Instead, you’ll just link your credit cards and loyalty accounts. Then in the app, you’ll manually claim each offer your purchases qualified for. You’ll earn up to about 10 - 20 points every time you claim an offer.

If you turn on your location data and share it with Pogo, they’ll do you like ShopKick and give you up to 1,000 points per month when you’re near select retailers. You don’t even have to check in manually.

Each point is worth about $0.01, so once you’ve built up enough to to get to 3,000 points (or $3) you can cash out. You can cash out via Venmo, PayPal, retailer gift cards, or a prepaid Visa gift card.

13. Take clear pictures to earn the most cash back with CoinOut.

With CoinOut, depending on how much you use the app you can earn anywhere between 10 and 50 coins per store receipt you upload or submit through connected email or store accounts (Walmart, Amazon, and Instacart) within 14 days of purchase. You can also earn rewards by shopping with select online merchants through the CoinOut app.

Deposit cash-back earnings to your PayPal account or Zelle account, or get Amazon gift cards. The lowest redemption level is $3 for 3,000 coins, but if you wait to cash out, you can get a better deal. For example, a $50 reward costs 47,000 coins instead of 50,000 coins.

KCL TIP: KCL reader Suzanne shared that taking a better quality image of your receipt can earn you more. It’s true, according to CoinOut, so make sure the receipt information is clear before submitting.

14. Earn $5 cash back over five to seven weeks with the ReceiptPal app.

You can earn points with ReceiptPal using receipts from any consumer goods store under the sun (ok, almost every possible receipt including those from over 1,000 retailers). The more points you earn, the more levels you unlock. For example, you might get a $5 Amazon gift card on Level 1 but a $10 gift card on Level 2.

With ReceiptPal, you can earn points by doing the following:

  • Uploading a picture of your receipt.

  • Connecting your email address so ReceiptPal can scan your inbox for receipts.

  • Connecting your retailer accounts (Amazon, Walmart, Starbucks, Kroger, and Instacart) so ReceiptPal can award points for your purchases.

You can earn up to 500 points per week, though more often than not, the max is 300. Here’s how many points you need to earn to get a gift card:

  • 2,200 points for a $5 gift card.

  • 4,000 points for a $10 gift card.

  • 9,250 points for a $25 gift card.

  • 17,250 points for a $50 gift card.

  • 32,250 points for a $100 gift card.

That makes every 100 points worth about $0.23 – $0.31.

You can submit as many receipts as you want each week. Extra receipts beyond your allowable point total earn you entries into sweepstakes. You’ll earn two sweeps entries for every receipt.

15. Earn money on fuel purchases with the TruNow app.

cellphone being held in front of gas pump with the TruNow app displayed

The TruNow rebate app is a little different because it focuses on gas stations — though you can also find cash-back deals for restaurants and other local businesses.

If you need to fill up your tank, TruNow shows you where the cheapest gas is near you. Then they give you cash back after you fill up. All you have to do is scan your receipt.

You can use your rewards toward in-app purchases at local gas stations, restaurants, and other stores. This method gives you full value for your rewards balance.

You can technically cash out via PayPal — but you’ll only get half the value of your rewards. This means if you’ve earned $25, you’ll only receive $12.50 if you cash out through PayPal.

16. Receipt apps for healthy stuff? Stock up on produce with Makeena.

Makeena is the best for healthier grocery choices and offers a ton of rebate offers on produce.

Most of these offers are for organic items, but sometimes there are offers for produce that don’t specify organic.

Some Makeena offers are only available for the first 1,000 people who claim them, and you need to make your purchase before you can unlock an offer — so don’t dawdle in uploading your receipt. Earn 1,000 Makeena Exclusive Points (redeemable for $1 cash) when you use our referral link to sign up. You might want to let those 1,000 points sit for a minute, though — you can get discounts if they build up. For example, you can redeem 4,500 points for $5 instead of 5,000.

You can cash out through Venmo or PayPal when you earn at least $20. It’ll take up to 30 days to hit your account.

KCL TIP: KCL has a ton of other produce coupons if these just aren’t enough.
