Do you have old jeans taking up space in your closet? And do you happen to live near one of the 150+ Madewell stores? Then you need to know about the Madewell jeans recycle program that’s offered all year long — and how it can take a quick $20 off your next jeans purchase.

And in April (in honor of Earth Day), we’ve seen Madewell level up their everyday recycling jeans promotion by giving away a free pair of jeans for every 20 pairs you recycle. The old jeans can be any brand, any adult size (male or female), ripped or stained!

Here’s what you need to know about Madewell’s two recycling programs — the limited-time “free jeans” promotion and their ongoing recycling initiative.

Madewell will give you $20 off new jeans when you donate an old pair (even other brands).

Madewell’s ongoing denim recycling program involves collecting old jeans and turning them into housing insulation for communities in need.

When you bring in a single pair of used jeans to any Madewell store, you’ll get a $20 coupon off any pair of jeans in their store or online. Note that you can’t apply this coupon to previous purchases, just future ones.

Here’s how to recycle your jeans at Madewell:

  • Gather any old jeans, regardless of the brand.
  • Go to your nearest Madewell store and donate the jeans to the store staff.
  • Receive a $20 voucher toward a future purchase of Madewell jeans.

Check their website for more information about the program.

In April 2023, Madewell offered a limited-time deal where you got a free pair of jeans when you recycled 20 used pairs.

Back in April 2023, Madewell ran a promotion to encourage the recycling of used denim. By bringing 20 pairs of old adult jeans from any brand to a Madewell store, you could receive a voucher good for a new pair of Madewell jeans. These normally run up to $148 per pair at full price, so this was a fantastic value!

Here’s what you had to do to get your free Madewell jeans:

  1. Collect 20 pairs of old jeans from any brand (check your local store beforehand for what they will accept. Some stores may accept kid sizes, but that depends on location. My location said if you have 18 adult-size jeans and two kid sizes, for example, they will accept it).
  2. Visit a local Madewell store during the promotion period (ended April 30, 2023).
  3. Donate the jeans to the store staff for recycling.
  4. Receive a voucher for a free pair of Madewell jeans.

We hope to see this offer return in April 2024 — we first got a heads-up by text from Madewell, so keep an eye out.

Pick up cheap pairs at garage sales, Buy Nothing groups, or thrift stores to trade in at Madewell.

So maybe you’re running a few pairs short of the 20 needed for recycling to scoop up a free pair of Madewell jeans in April. Check thrift stores, garage sales, and Facebook’s Buy Nothing groups to get your hands on some extra jeans for cheap.

Considering Madewell jeans range in price from $98 to $148, you should still come out ahead on this even with a spend of a few dollars.

What does Madewell do with the recycled jeans?

Through their partnership with the Blue Jeans Go Green program, Madewell converts the donated denim into housing insulation. This material is then used in the construction of homes for communities in need.

As for the benefits, participating in Madewell’s recycle jeans programs contributes to reducing textile waste and conserving natural resources. Recycling old jeans decreases the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. The process also reduces the environmental impact associated with traditional insulation materials.
