What One Woman Learned When Costco Booted Her

I love Costco not just for the unbeatable deals I get, but because they’re so darn nice about returns. They’re known for giving your money back for just about anything they sell.

But some people take advantage of this kindness, and in doing so, find the limits of Costco’s generosity.

One woman experienced this a few weeks back. Here’s what she learned:

You can return pretty much everything you buy at Costco.

In theory, you can buy a camera from Costco, use it all summer to document your vacations — and they’ll take it back.

Electronics and major appliances can be returned within 90 days. You’ve gotta bring in your paperwork to return a diamond.

Everything else? Pretty much fair game with no set time limits. They’ve hit legendary status with this policy (although they’re not the only ones).

People have (successfully) tried to return weird things.

via Reddit

It was big news earlier this year when another customer successfully returned her dead Christmas tree after the holiday season.

Opened underwear packages, used chicken coops and empty bottles of wine all have been returned successfully.

But there’s a limit. . .

You can’t return a 2012 printer in 2018.

Maryam Nicksolat learned this the hard way last month. The printer she tried to return was exempt from the 90-day return policy.

Maryam said the printer had issues from day one. She said she meant to return it sooner, but, you know. . . life got busy. It happens!

If you return too much, it’s clear the relationship isn’t working.

When she tried to return the printer, a Costco manager accepted the return — and revoked her membership.

Why? The manager looked up Maryam’s return history, and it was substantial! They said that she clearly wasn’t happy with Costco’s products and that they should just go their separate ways.

“It’s not you, it’s me.”

But even if Costco kicks you out, they’re still super nice about it.

Part of Costco’s return policy includes the membership itself. If you aren’t happy with your membership, they’ll refund your dues — no problem.

Costco figured that Maryam wasn’t happy with her membership — and refunded the full price of her annual membership (not that she actually needs one).

No word on whether she bought a new printer.
