Walmart Plus Student Deal: How It Works and When to Expect It

First things first — if you’re hoping for a standard Walmart student discount that works on your purchases year-round, you’re out of luck. But if you want to save 50% on a new Walmart Plus membership as a college or grad student, you can totally do that!

The only catch? The Walmart Plus Student discount is only offered for a limited time during back-to-school season, usually from late June until mid-September. So you'll need to sign up during the next offer period in order to get 50% off a Walmart Plus membership.

It's also important to know that Walmart doesn’t offer a student discount in the traditional sense (unless you’re a student who qualifies for the 10% Walmart employee discount).

Here’s everything you need to know about this limited-time offer from Walmart, including how to sign up, the benefits, and how often we see it.

How much is the Walmart Plus student discount?

When the deal is live (expect to see it by the last week of June), you can sign up for a Walmart Plus Student membership for either $6.47 a month or $49 a year — which is 50% off the regular price.

The best part about this discount is that you get to keep the low price for as long as you can confirm your eligibility as a college student. You'll also get a 30-day free trial when you enroll as a new member.

What are the benefits of a Walmart Plus Student membership?

Walmart+ Student offers a ton of benefits in store, online, at the pump, and with their partners like Apple Music, Calm, Angi, and Xbox Game Pass.

Here’s a look at some of the most popular membership benefits for students:

Free shipping with no minimums.

Get free shipping all day, every day, with no order minimum required. Without a Walmart+ Student membership, you must spend $35 per order to get free shipping.

KCL TIP: As a Walmart Plus member (any level), you’ll get early access to big sales like Walmart Deals in July and Walmart Black Friday in the fall. You’ll also be able to shop exclusive member-only sales like Walmart Plus Week in June.

Free delivery from your local Walmart.

You can get your groceries and more delivered from your local Walmart store with none of the usual Walmart delivery fees, as long as your order total is at least $35. This means you can get free delivery on things for your apartment or dorm room — like vacuums and storage bins — without the need to make a trip to the store.

Get a $10 off $35 promo code when you complete three activities.

If you complete three activities within 30 days of signing up for your Walmart+ Student subscription, you’ll unlock a promo code for $10 off a purchase of $35 or more. To get the promo code, you must do these three things:

  • Download the Walmart app (iOS / Android).

  • Place an order for free delivery.

  • Earn $1 in Walmart Cash.

Once you complete these activities, you’ll find the promo code in your Walmart account and email. The $10 off code expires 30 days after you earn it.

Watch Paramount+ Essential for free.

We all know streaming channels have cut back on password sharing, free access, and content. Luckily, Paramount+ Essential (regularly $5.99/month or $59.99/year) comes free with your Walmart+ Student membership. This benefit can save you up to $71.88 a year versus paying month to month.

A gas discount of $0.10 off per gallon.

With your Walmart+ Student subscription, you can save $0.10 per gallon of gas at over 13,000 locations, including Exxon, Mobil, Walmart, and Murphy stations. Your membership will also give you a discount at Sam’s Club gas pumps.

Saving $0.10 per gallon may not sound like much, but for a 12-gallon fuel tank, you’d save $1.20 per fill up with a Walmart Plus membership. If you fill up your tank once a week, you’d save $62.40 over the course of a year — more than enough to cover the cost of the discounted student membership.

Earn rewards with Walmart+ Travel.

You can make reservations with Walmart+ Travel and earn up to 5% back in Walmart Cash on flights, rental cars, hotels, and more. You can use your Walmart Cash to pay for purchases in store or online.

Who qualifies for the Walmart Plus Student membership?

According to the fine print on Walmart’s Terms and Conditions page, you’re eligible for a discounted Walmart Plus Student membership if you can meet the following requirements:

  • You’re currently enrolled (or will be enrolled) in an undergraduate or advanced degree program at a Title IV-accredited college or university in the U.S.

  • You live in the U.S.

  • You're 18 years of age or older.

  • You can verify your eligibility through SheerID.

To verify your eligibility, you’ll need to have a few official documents on hand that show your full name, school name, and current enrollment.

Once verified, you can begin using your Walmart Plus Student benefits right away. But remember, you can only go through this process when the discount offer is available during back-to-school season.

Remember that the Walmart Plus Student discount isn't available year-round.

You can only claim the 50% off deal as a college or grad student during the offer window when it's available.

Here are the most recent offer windows when it popped up:

  • June 27 - Sept. 13, 2024

  • July 28 - Sept. 13, 2023 (first time the discount was offered)
