As a parent of a five-year old, I love purchasing new books to help encourage my son’s love of reading. He loves roaming around Barnes & Noble and checking out the books about bugs, space, cars and everything else boys typically enjoy! However, as much as I would love to load up on new books every week at B&N, they can add up fast! In fact, I could easily spend $50 or more in just one trip! If you love to read but hate the high cost of books, check out these 6 tips to get more for your money at Barnes & Noble.

Get emails

One of the best ways to save at any retailer is to sign up for their email alerts, and Barnes & Noble is no exception! By signing up for B&N’s newsletter, subscribers receive updates about Barnes & Noble happenings and events, along with information about new releases, sales and, you guessed it—coupons! Although coupon amounts vary, B&N occasionally sends out coupons for 15% or 20% off as well as the occasional mystery coupon. Subscribers can also personalize their email preferences and receive alerts about music and DVDs so you don’t miss your favorite band’s newest release! To sign up for B&N emails and personalize your preferences, check out Barnes & Noble’s newsletter page.

Become a member

Although becoming a Barnes & Noble member isn’t free, it can be well worth the $25 yearly fee if you’re a regular B&N shopper. In addition to receiving free express shipping on all orders, members receive special savings via email throughout the year. If you’re wondering if membership gets you any discounts, it does! Members receive a whopping 40% off hardcover bestsellers and 10% off nearly everything else. In fact, you’ll even get the 10% discount in the cafe as well as on toys and games, DVDs, books, calendars and music. One of the best perks of a new membership is the fact that B&N sends new members $50 in bonus coupons when you sign up! If you’re debating about signing up but unsure of how much it will really save you, you can try it out with their free 2-month membership. The 2-month membership is available with a credit or debit card purchase to those who haven’t previously had a membership. Cancel at any time before the 2 months, or opt to be upgraded to a yearly membership.

Sign up for Kids’ Club

If you’ve got a young reader in your house, be sure to sign them up for Barnes & Noble’s Kids’ Club. The Club, which is free to join, offers young readers and parents some serious perks! Upon signing up, you’ll be sent a coupon for 30% off any one kids’ book or toy to welcome your child to the program. Next, you’ll receive a $5.00 reward for every $100 that you spend on kids’ stuff in stores or online. Although the savings may appeal more to you than your little one, they’ll be sure to appreciate at least one perk—a free cupcake from the cafe on their birthday! Additionally, members of the Kids’ Club are automatically signed up for the kids’ monthly newsletter, which often features extra savings such as coupons as well as alerts to new items and children’s events going on at your local store.

Deal of the Day

I love when my favorite retailers offer a deal of the day, and Barnes & Noble just happens to be one of those retailers! Every morning I hop over to the B&N site to see what the day’s deal is and have found quite a few great buys! The deal of the day, which is featured on the homepage, often features best-selling books for as much as 50% off. In the past I’ve spotted cookbooks, non-fiction, fitness and much more in the daily deals. Additionally, once you click on the daily deal you’ll be brought to a page full of deals in other categories including Nook books, DVDs, magazines, electronics and even apps.

Get a B&N MasterCard

If you’ve been searching for a credit card that offers rewards that your family will actually use, consider checking out the Barnes & Noble MasterCard. This card, which has no annual fee, offers shoppers a 5% discount on all purchases at Barnes & Noble with the exception of gift cards. If you’re a member and wondering if you can combine the two discounts, the answer is yes! In fact, you’ll get the 5% discount on top of any coupons or other discounts you have. In addition to saving 5% on purchases at B&N, cardholders earn one point for each dollar spent anywhere else and will automatically receive a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card for every 2500 points earned. Another great perk? The $25 Barnes & Noble gift card that they send to new cardholders after making an initial purchase with the card.
