We got kind of a break from the retail apocalypse in 2022, but here we are in 2024, two years later, still seeing store closings, fueled mainly by inflation and economic uncertainty.

Lots of store chains — particularly the mall-based ones — continue to struggle, and some are calling it quits. We’ve listed every major chain that closed 10 or more stores over the last year or are closing in 2024, and will keep this updated as news breaks. Not all of these stores will have liquidation sales — some move product around to other stores — but when there are savings to be had, we’ll let you know in this list.

Speaking of which, it’s probably a good time to brush up on how liquidation sales work, so you can be ready for all the closeout savings that are headed your way.

New Store Closings

LL Flooring (Lumber Liquidators) shuttering 211 stores.

LL Flooring (previously known as Lumber Liquidators) recently announced they were going out of business and closing all of their locations. However, the retailer was saved by a last-minute buyer. While this means L.L. Flooring will stay in business, they are still liquidating over 200 stores.

Big Lots is closing over 300 stores (about 20% of their 1,389 locations).

Big Lots is in trouble. Knee-deep in debt, they recently filed for bankruptcy after announcing they would close hundreds of locations. But Big Lots has since continued to add hundreds of locations that they will shutter in the coming months.

California leads the closure list with 75 locations closed or closing down. Note, you can save 30% to 50% at locations that are closing. Plus, you can still shop on BigLots.com. Here's a look at the latest stores to make the closing list:

Conn's HomePlus and Badcock Home are closing all of their 550 stores.

Conn's HomePlus and Badcock Home recently filed bankruptcy and announced they would close all of their locations across 15 states. Right now, everything is on sale for 30% - 50% in stores and online. You'll find discounted appliances, furniture, TVs, laptops, and more during their liquidation sales.

Conn's HomePlus and Badcock Home stores are located throughout Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. All stores will be closed by Oct. 31, 2024.

Store Closings 2024

99 Cents Only Stores will close all 371 locations.

All 99 Cents Only Stores (371 locations across Arizona, California, Nevada, and Texas) will close over the coming weeks with liquidation sales on their merchandise, fixtures, furnishings, and equipment. According to the 99 Cents Only Stores press release, these sales were expected to begin on April 5, 2024.

Best Buy will close 10 - 15 stores.

Best Buy announced they will close 10 - 15 underperforming traditional stores this year as their leases expire. On the bright side, they recently started removing outdated technology such as DVDs and Blu-ray and plan on opening more outlet stores and smaller stores.

BOB's Stores closed all 21 stores.

After 70 years in business, BOB's Stores recently closed all 21 of their stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. All stores had liquidation sales with discounts of 30% - 70% off.

CVS is closing 300 stores this year.

CVS will close 300 stores this year (this is one-third of the 900 stores they announced would close starting in 2022). Even though it sounds like a lot, it’s about 9% of their 10,000 stores in the U.S. The stores that are more likely to close are in areas where there are already lots of CVS stores. Don’t expect any big closing sales, though.

The company is also looking at changing some stores into different things like health clinics or CVS HealthHUBs, which offer more than just pharmacy services. They’re doing all this to fit changing customer habits, which include more online shopping and curbside pickup.

Express is closing around 100 stores.

Express recently filed bankruptcy and announced they'll close 95 of their 500 Express and Express Factory Outlet stores and every one of their 10 UpWest stores. But it appears that Express may have a couple of investors offering to buy the company's assets, in addition to securing over $80 million dollars between existing lenders and the IRS (thanks to the CARES Act).

Family Dollar will shutter 1,000 stores.

After losing $1.71 billion in three months, Dollar Tree, which owns Family Dollar, has announced they'll close 600 Family Dollar stores in 2024. Plus, another 370 stores will close when their leases expire.

Dollar Tree is also going to close 30 of their namesake locations this year once their leases expire.

Foot Locker is closing up to 420 stores.

Foot Locker’s plan to close up to 420 of their 1,300 North American mall-based stores by 2026 represents a closure of approximately 32.3%. Instead, they’re looking to open around 300 smaller, freestanding stores geared toward kids, sneakerheads, and higher-priced items.

Since you’re not likely gonna see liquidation sales with this plan, you’ll want to find your own Nike deals and Adidas deals.

Joann Fabrics & Crafts

It's official, after a few weeks of rumblings, Joann filed for bankruptcy on March 18, 2024. According to reports, all 800 U.S. stores and Joann.com will remain open for business while the company restructures their finances.

Although Covid initially boosted sales for crafts and DIY essentials, by the end of 2023, Joann was in a sales slump, facing a drop of more than 4% in their year-over-year earning. Here's hoping at 81 years old, Joann has what it takes to stay the course and avoid store closures.

Note that we're preparing for the worst, which is why they made our 2024 closure list.

Macy's is closing around 150 stores through 2026.

As part of Macy's strategy to create a "more modern Macy's Inc," they'll close about 150 underproductive stores through 2026, starting with 50 this year. Macy's intends to upgrade their remaining stores and open 15 new Bloomingdale's locations and 30 Bluemercury locations.

Rite Aid will close 400 - 500 stores as part of bankruptcy filing.

Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Oct. 15, 2023, and as part of their financial restructuring, they’ll be closing 400 - 500 of their 2,200 stores — which is 18% - 23% of their total stores.

The third-largest pharmacy chain has experienced declining sales and a tanking stock price as well as mounting debt. They’re currently $3 billion in debt and are in the midst of opioid-related lawsuits.

Stores have already started closing. Although there won’t be any true liquidation sales, customers have said that their closing stores have a lot of product discounted 50% - 75% off. Here are the stores that will close in 2024:

Rue21

After filing bankruptcy for the third time in just over two decades, rue21 has announced they'll close all of their remaining 540 locations. Rue21's previous bankruptcy filings took place in 2001 and 2017. As part of the 2017 bankruptcy, rue21 closed 400 stores. With no buyers in sight, Rue21 stores closed. Although you can't shop on rue21.com, for now, you can still access the list of rue21 locations.

Sam Ash stores are located in California, Connecticut, Florida, New York, New Jersey, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas. Store closing sales began May 2.

Stop & Shop

  • Connecticut: 5 stores

  • Massachusetts: 8 stores

  • New Jersey: 10 stores

  • New York: 7 stores

  • Rhode Island: 2 stores

The Body Shop

After struggling financially for years, The Body Shop filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy in New York and closed all of their 50 U.S. locations on March 1, 2024. Unfortunately for the U.S. stores, employees, and vendors, The Body Shop's parent company took all cash from U.S. operations before filing, leaving U.S. store unable to pay their vendors and other obligations.

Walgreens is closing up to 25% of stores.

Walgreens announced earlier this year that they're looking at 25% of their stores (about 8,600) for potential closure as the company continues to focus on their financial turnaround. If this estimate comes to fruition, over 2,100 Walgreens locations could shutter over the next few years. This is after they recently announced they're going to close about 1,200 underperforming stores. They haven’t yet released any specifics about the exact number of stores or which locations are under watch, but regardless, don’t expect liquidation sales. The drugstore chain will likely move products around to whatever stores left.

Bed Bath & Beyond closed all 360 of their stores.

Best Buy shuttered 23 stores last year.

Best Buy closed 24 of their stores in 2023. They plan to close 15 - 20 locations through this year into Jan 2025.

Boston Market closed 50 locations.

Boston Market is dealing with significant financial problems and legal troubles, leading to recent closures of 50 more stores. In August 2023, New Jersey’s Labor Department ordered 27 locations to close temporarily after an investigation found that the chain owed more than $600,000 in back wages to 314 employees.

But that’s just the beginning. The Daily Mail has reported that company-wide, Boston Market owes a lot of money — over $329,000 in unpaid sales and payroll taxes. This has led to some big problems, like their main office being taken over and stores being kicked out of their locations because they couldn’t pay the rent.

Plus, the owner of Boston Market, Jignesh Pandya, has himself filed for personal bankruptcy protection.

Between 2017 and 2022, the Golden, Colorado-based chain closed 161 stores, according to Market research firm Technomic. It appears there are now only about 250 locations left.

Burger King closed about 300 locations.

Burger King closed about 300 restaurants nationwide in 2023, which was about 3.7% of the total locations in the country. The CEO maintained that it’s pretty typical for the company to close a couple hundred Burger King locations each year. As of Feb. 14, 2024, it appears that most of the closures are done. This doesn't mean they won't close more restaurants this year or in the future — the numbers won't be as high as the last few years.

BuyBuy Baby has closed all 122 of their stores.

As part of Bed Bath & Beyond’s bankruptcy filing, all 122 BuyBuy Baby stores in 37 states closed in 2023.

HomeGoods closed their online store.

After just two years, HomeGoods has closed their online store. The company says the online store wasn’t making much money; sales represented less than 1% of their total for the year. But if you’re a fan of HomeGoods’ sister companies TJ Maxx, Marshalls, or Sierra — don’t worry. Their online stores are staying open. It’s just HomeGoods that’s going offline. All 900 brick-and-mortar stores will remain open.

Jane.com shut down operations.

Jane.com abruptly shut down on Nov. 17, 2023. It was an online marketplace for women’s fashion, home decor, and children’s clothing. This closure left sellers, mainly from women-owned small businesses, and shoppers in a bind.

This unexpected shutdown left employees jobless and without benefits, communication on social media restricted, shoppers without their orders, and sellers with unpaid dues. However, this online retailer appears to have some life left. The website shows a message from new owners sharing that they intend to reopen Jane.com by May 31, 2024 (although it mentions that the exact date is not set).

Journeys closed 100+ stores.

Footwear, apparel, and accessories retailer Journeys closed over 100 stores in 2023, exceeding their previous closure plans, due to a decline in sales and changing consumer demand. The increased store closures was to help save the company up to $40 million and allow Journeys to adapt.

Lidl shuttered 11 supermarket locations in six states.

According to Business Insider, a handful of Lidl locations shuttered in 2023 due to underperformance. The German supermarket — often compared to Aldi — closed two locations in New Jersey (Burlington and Howell), two locations in North Carolina (Cary and Thomasville), two locations in Maryland (Brooklyn Park and Oxon Hill), two locations in South Carolina (Florence and North Augusta), two locations in Virginia (Charlottesville and Richmond), and one location in Pennsylvania (King of Prussia).

Moosejaw closed 11 out of their 14 stores.

Dick’s Sporting Goods closed 11 out of 14 Moosejaw stores. This decision comes just half a year after Dick’s bought Moosejaw from Walmart. The plan is to focus more on their Public Lands stores, which are part of their outdoor business.

Although they shut down their physical stores, you can still shop outdoor gear on Moosejaw’s website. The three stores in Salt Lake City, Birmingham (Ala.), and Bentonville (Ark.) remain open. This shift is part of Dick’s strategy to streamline their business and make things more efficient, especially in the online shopping world. Despite closing most of the physical stores, Moosejaw continues to play a big role in Dick’s digital outdoor gear sales.

Nordstrom closed 15 stores.

Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack closed 15 stores across the U.S. in 2023. However, store openings continue to occur. Here are some of the planned Nordstrom Rack store openings over the next year:

Zulily shut down operations after 13 years.

This one was a surprise. Zulily, the online retailer known for their daily deals on women’s and kids’ clothing, announced on Dec. 8 that they were shutting down after 13 years. This sudden closure followed layoffs of about 800 staff members and the closure of their Seattle headquarters and other locations. They had a tough time competing with other online retailers — most notably with shipping costs.

Like Jane.com, it looks like Zulily will rejoin online retailers after Beyond, Inc. (formerly known as Overstock.com) bought Zulily's intellectual property. Although there's no set return date, watch for Zulily to make its comeback fairly soon, considering it only took Overstock.com just three months to breathe life back into Bed, Bath & Beyond.
