CVS plans to close 270 stores in 2025.

Back in 2022, CVS announced plans to close 300 stores annually through 2024, totaling 900 closures. This affected both stand-alone CVS stores and some within Target locations. Now, in 2025, they're shutting down an additional 270 stores while opening 30 new locations, including some inside Target stores.
CVS has explained that the decision to close locations is influenced by many factors, including local market dynamics, shifts in population, the number of stores in the community, and various ways to serve community needs. Despite this, CVS says 85% of Americans will still live within 10 miles of a CVS Pharmacy.
Unfortunately, CVS hasn't made it easy to determine if your local store is going to be closing. They haven’t released an official list of affected locations, and I didn’t receive a response when I reached out. If you want to check your local store's status, consider visiting the CVS website or contacting customer service.
Other drugstores are also closing locations in 2025.
CVS isn’t the only drugstore closing locations — Rite Aid closed 77 stores in March 2024 and plans to close about 400 this year. Walgreens also plans to close around 150 locations and cut 10% of their corporate team in 2025. And we've been tracking other retailers closing up shop (like Joann and Big Lots) on our giant list of store closures.

CVS will have three store formats, and some CVS locations may now offer a MinuteClinic or HealthHUB.
Instead of sticking with one type of CVS store for everyone, they’re planning to roll out three store formats: the standard CVS pharmacy and retail stores, HealthHUB sites, and MinuteClinic locations within CVS retail stores or Target stores.
While you're probably familiar with MinuteClinic locations, which are run by licensed nurse practitioners and physician associates, the CVS HealthHUB is like an enhanced health care clinic. They offer everything a MinuteClinic has, but they also staff licensed therapists and can handle chronic issues like diabetes. They even have wellness rooms for health classes.
No matter what, you can keep couponing and saving at CVS, even if it's just online.

Despite the shift in store locations and formats in 2025, you can keep couponing and saving at CVS. If you’ll mostly use CVS online, consider paying for the CVS ExtraCare Plus membership (sign up here), which offers benefits like free shipping and $10 ExtraBucks rewards each month.
