For years, Amazon offered discounted Amazon Prime Student to students who could verify their education status with a student ID or school email.

In 2024, Amazon changed things up, calling it Prime for Young Adults and opening it up to anyone aged 18 to 24, not just students. It costs $7.49 per month (50% off the cost of regular Prime membership). Right now, you can grab a 6-month free trial to Amazon Prime Student and you don't need a student ID. It's one of the many freebies for college students.

Here's everything you need to know about the Amazon Prime Student free trial and all the benefits and exclusive offers you'll get with your free Prime membership.

What is Prime Student?

Prime Student (Amazon's now calling it Prime for Young Adults) is a discounted version of Amazon Prime for college students and anyone aged 18 to 24. When you sign up, you'll enter your details, including which school you attend (if applicable), your name, your birthday, your expected graduation year, or your age.

Once you turn 25, your student subscription will automatically change over to a regular Prime Membership on its anniversary date (at then-current rates).

How Does Prime for Young Adults Verify Age?

New to 2024, you can verify one of two ways: by age or student status. Yep, Amazon is now offering Prime Student to anyone (even non-students) aged 18 to 24. So if you fall in this age group, you can sign up for Prime Student with no student ID or school email necessary.

However, you'll need to submit a driver's license, passport, or other identification that proves your age.

Follow the remaining steps. That’s it! Now you can start enjoying all the best Prime benefits.

If you're over 24, you’ll need to provide proof of your student status.

You'll have to verify your student status if either of these apply:

  • Are 25 or older.

  • You elected to sign up with school status.

To verify your status as a student, Amazon will send a link to your .edu address so that you can click through and show the account is still active.

You don’t need to use your .edu address for your Amazon orders — you can enter a gmail account or the like — but your .edu still needs to be active.

Even without an .edu address, you’ll still qualify for Prime Student if you can produce the documentation for your classes. You may need to present one or more of the following forms of documentation:

  • Your student ID (showing the current term or expiration date). A student number alone won’t work.

  • Your transcript or class list with your name and the school’s name. It must be the current term.

  • Your tuition bill for the current term. It must have your name and the school’s name listed.

  • An acceptance letter for the upcoming term, with matriculation date.

If your documentation doesn’t meet these criteria, Amazon will automatically upgrade you to a regular Prime membership.

Can I share my Amazon Student Prime account?

Although Amazon frowns upon sharing an Amazon with others (unless you're setup as a household). But, you can always share your Amazon account the “alternative” way. Just give your login info to your family members so they can use your Prime membership benefits. Amazon can’t police this, but be sure everyone double-checks before placing orders so credit cards and addresses don’t get mixed up.

Can I sign up for Amazon for Young Adults even if I'm already a Prime member (and get a refund)?

Sign up for Amazon for Young Adults, and once you qualify, you’ll get a refund for the remaining months of your regular Prime membership. This will begin your free six months of Prime too. After six months, you’ll be billed at the regular student rate.
