As someone with a family history of skin cancer, you can find me doing the absolute most to reduce my risks and protect my skin from the sun. Over the years, I’ve learned which sun care products are helpful in shading my skin, protecting it from damage, and also giving me a sunless glow.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, which is perfect timing as we head into summer and spend more time outside. But I think it’s also a good reminder that we should be sun safe year-round, even when it’s overcast. Don’t let the cost of sun protection deter you from applying the stuff every day, or wearing UV-protective clothing. I’ll get into options in a range of price points below.

As far as preventative measures, I asked our team to round up some sunscreen deals, as well as deals on hats, umbrellas, and more to keep your skin safe this summer. Here are some of our favorite sun care products for every day wear.

Sunscreen Protection

Wearing sunscreen is crucial for protecting your skin from harmful UV radiation. I always aim for a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher that can block about 97% of UVB rays because that’s what is recommended by dermatologists. It also helps prevent premature aging, reduces the risk of skin cancer, and shields against sunburns. Remember to apply it generously and reapply every two hours for maximum effectiveness.

Sunless Tanners

I still love a good tan but not at the price of increasing my risk for skin cancer, and that’s why I love sunless tanner. It’s a cost-effective way to stay tan during the summer, special events, or all year long if you want.

Sun-safe Swimwear and Apparel

Wearing UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) clothing and hats provides an additional layer of defense against harmful UV radiation. UPF clothing is specially designed to block UV rays, offering superior protection compared to regular clothing. I’m a fan of wide-brimmed hats (also ideally with UPF protection) that provide shade for the face, neck, and ears, reducing sun exposure and lowering the risk of sunburns and skin damage. Plus, they’re chic AF.

Outdoor Sun Care Products

Ultraviolet (UV) rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so staying in the shade during those hours can reduce your risk of sunburns and skin damage. Remember, shade alone doesn’t provide complete protection, so complement it with other sun-safe practices like sunscreen and protective clothing that we listed above.
