It’s getting old outside and that means it’s time to bundle up! Here are some of KCL’s favorite shoe and clothing hacks to help you survive the winter. Check out these jacket deals to keep you warm!

1. Keep feet warm with a homemade felt or fabric insert.

Use the insoles from a winter shoe to make the pattern on wool felt or fabric. You can find wool fabric at craft stores like Jo-Ann Fabrics or even on Amazon.

2. Use the freezer to stop sweater shedding.

If you have a sweater that sheds, throw it in the freezer overnight in a sealed bag. This locks in the fibers and stops the shedding.

3. Keep jeans tucked into boots with a mitten clip.

4. Sand the bottoms of shoes that have slippery soles.

Here’s a solution that prevents potential falls or sliding in the snow—and all that’s required is a piece of sandpaper.

5. Create leg warmers from a sweater.

Here’s a project that requires no sewing. Find an old sweater and cut the sleeves off. If they fit your legs you’re in luck; otherwise, cut off any excess. Include embellishments like buttons and flowers.

6. Or, turn an old sweater into boot socks.

All you do is snip off the sleeves of an old sweater and put them on.

7. Add patchwork to ripped jeans.

Leave no gap open for cold air to come in. Sew a cute patch under a rip.

8. Use clear nail polish to stop a run in your stocking or tights.

9. Extend the life of tights by freezing them first.

Run your brand-new tights under water, wring them out and freeze them overnight in a plastic bag. This will strengthen the fibers in the tights.

10. Keep hosiery and tights from snagging by storing them individually in zip bags.

11. Tame static-prone hair by putting a dryer sheet over your brush’s bristles.

12. Add length and style to a plain scarf with lace.

With a little sewing as these instructions show, you not only add some length to a drab scarf but you turn it into an expensive and chic-looking accessory.

13. Wear a turtleneck under a summer dress.

Not only do you have an added layer but you’ve just winterized your summer wardrobe. Voila.

14. Transform an old pilled sweater with a razor.

This is a fast and easy way to remove pills and fuzz from a sweater.

15. Add a tank top between a sweater and button-up for a smoother look.

No more button outlines or bunching!

16. Soften an itchy sweater with hair conditioner and white vinegar.

Mix a few tablespoons of white vinegar with cold water, and soak your sweater for 15 minutes. Massage hair conditioner into the sweater and let it sit for half an hour. Rinse it all out and lay your sweater flat to dry. The result is a lot less itchiness.

17. Clean dirt and salt off suede and leather boots with equal parts water and vinegar.

Dip a clean towel in a bowl with equal parts water and vinegar and wipe away. Air dry boots completely before wearing.

18. Stuff wet shoes with newspaper to absorb moisture quickly.

19. Keep tall boots upright with pool noodles.

20. Free a caught zipper by coloring the teeth on both sides with a crayon.
