How to Get Free Starbucks Refills

Starbucks recently change their refill policy. As of Jan. 27, 2025, anyone can get free refills at Starbucks — not just Starbucks Rewards members.

As of this policy change, there are now two ways to get free Starbucks refills.

  1. Bring your own cup.

  2. Order your drink in a Starbucks for-here cup.

Once you've finished your original drink, you can ask the register for your free refill of hot or iced coffee or tea. There are a few exclusions, though — more on that below.

Does Starbucks give free refills at Target?

Can you get Starbucks refills at any Starbucks location? Yes, you can get your refills at every Starbucks location, including ones inside Target and Safeway. That being said, they're going to follow the same policy. So if you want to order a drink to enjoy while you shop and fill up before you leave, bring your own cup.

There are four exceptions to the Starbucks Refill Policy.

Here's where things get a little more in depth. Along with the first rule of the policy — personal cup or for-here cup — there are a few exceptions:

  1. You must order and drink your original drink inside the cafe to be eligible for a refill.

  2. Refills must be ordered during the same visit.

  3. Regardless of your original drink, refills can only be hot or iced coffee or tea. Exclusions include Cold Brew, Nitro Cold Brew, Iced Tea Lemonade, Flavored Iced Teas, and Starbucks Refreshers.

  4. Additions — syrups, sauces, toppings — cost extra. Starbucks no longer charges for milk alternatives.
