Since late April, Bed Bath & Beyond has been slowly winding down operations, holding liquidation sales as they close all of their stores by Sunday, July 30. And it looks like the end has come. A quick visit to the Bed Bath & Beyond website shows the site is no longer active, with a note to “check back soon”.
Discounts were 90% off the lowest ticketed prices storewide — on whatever was left. Based on what I saw at my store in New Jersey, the shelves were scarce, but some locations may have had better-discounted inventory than others. BuyBuy Baby liquidation sales were happening at the same time, but similar to Bed Bath & Beyond, their website is now “under construction”.
As far as Bed Bath & Beyond’s future, they were bought by Overstock.com and Overstock.com plans to rename themselves “Bed Bath & Beyond.” So while the name is staying (sort of), the stores will officially be gone after July 30. We expect the Bed Bath & Beyond website may be up and running again at some point, but we aren’t sure of any dates yet.
We’re breaking it all down here and explaining how to get the best deals during Bed Bath & Beyond’s final day of liquidating.
All Bed Bath & Beyond stores closed on July 30, 2023.
As of July 17, the vast majority of stores are closed, and there’s no rhyme or reason (or list) for finding the still-open locations. (Although the one in KCL’s backyard, Meridian, Idaho, is still open). But they’re all officially closed as of July 30, 2023.
If your store happened to be one of the last to close, you probably saw liquidation sales that were 90% off the lowest ticketed prices, across everything in the store. Now, chances are, the best items were already gone by that point — plenty of shoppers reported that their stores only had paper products and generally undesirable items.
On the final day before my closest store closed, everything was 90% off. The day prior, it was 80% – 90% off. (My store in NJ closed down in May since it was one of the first announced closures after the chain filed for bankruptcy. But now all stores are closed, similar to what we’re seeing happen with Christmas Tree Shops).
Previously, employees weren’t told much about the BBB liquidation sales.
Employees told me that it was a complete guessing game when it came to knowing what would get discounted next during the liquidation sale. They got an email the night before or the day they arrived at work, and they started discounting the items as soon as they were told. The pattern at my store started off with new slash-downs every Wednesday, with curtains, duvet covers, and window hardware starting at 50% off.
Watch Out for Markups
Like the controversial Christmas Tree Shops liquidation sales happening now, shoppers on the internet were accusing Bed Bath & Beyond liquidators of marking up price tags so they could recoup the most money possible in the sale. There’s no telling whether it was happening across the chain or if it was isolated to certain stores, but the best rule of thumb during store closures is to make sure there aren’t price tags stacked on top of each other. If there are, peel back the layers to find the cheapest tag. The sale honors the “lowest ticketed price”, so make sure that’s what you have when you check out.
Here’s a breakdown of what happened at my store:
1. Homeware was the section with the most inventory left at the end of the sale, with everything marked down 80% -90%.
While most sections were completely empty when the store went to 80% off, shoppers stocked up on $1 glasses (regular price $5) and other homeware supplies.
Here’s a snapshot of other items that were discounted and in stock during the sale.
$10 Jewelry Trays
$2 Travel Cups
3. Christmas markdowns started at 50% off and ended up at 90% off, with plenty left in stock.
I spotted the best deals in the Christmas section, where everything was 90% off. I saw ornaments and tree toppers discounted, as well as lights and figurines.
Check out some of the BB&B Christmas clearance sales I found:
Decorative trees 80% off, down to $1.60.
90% off stockings, placemats, and ornaments
Tree toppers down to $1.15, (reg. $15), a savings of $13.50!
4. The store fixtures were also for sale — but they went fast.
During liquidation sales at BB&B and buybuy Baby, they sold a lot of their fixtures and office supplies for dirt cheap. At first, I spotted a wall with items for sale, including a floating table for $40, a fridge for $150, shelving for $100, bins for $100, shopping carts for $100, lockers for $60, filing cabinets for $30, office chairs for $25, an office desk for $50, and other various office supplies. It was worth taking a look at some final sale items. By the time the store was closing, there were about eight fixtures left to shop.
What’s next for Bed Bath & Beyond?
BedBathandBeyond.com will be taken over by Overstock.
Big news on June 29, 2023 — Overstock.com bought the intellectual property of Bed Bath & Beyond at an auction, so while stores won’t reopen, you will see Overstock.com rebrand their website to BedBathandBeyond.com very soon. In Canada, they offered customers 20% off coupons and were honoring BBB coupons. You can expect coupons in the U.S. too when the rebranding happens!
You can’t use your 20% off coupons anymore — nor gift cards, gift certificates, or Welcome Rewards points.
Bed Bath & Beyond and buybuy Baby stopped accepting their iconic 20% off coupons on April 26, 2023. And both Bed Bath & Beyond and buybuy Baby stopped accepting gift cards, gift certificates, and loyalty certificates as of May 8, 2023.
Also, any points earned from Welcome Rewards (their free loyalty program that customers could join) and the paid membership Welcome Rewards+ are no longer accepted, either.
Anything you buy is considered final sale.
The return policies at Bed Bath & Beyond and buybuy Baby have changed. Anything you bought on or after April 26 was final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged.
Online orders were still fulfilled.
If you placed an online order through buybuy Baby or Bed Bath & Beyond during the closures, they were still fulfilled. “We expect all in-stock orders placed online both prior and after our bankruptcy filing to be fulfilled at this time,” the announcement said. Since Overstock.com purchased them, there were no shipping issues on orders placed before closing.
If you had a registry with Bed Bath & Beyond and/or buybuy Baby, you’ll move to a new platform.
“We expect to partner with an alternative platform where you will be able to transfer your data and complete your registry,” the statement from the chains wrote. “We will provide details in the coming days.”
For now, your registry data is safe, and you can still view your registry for the time being. But expect your registry to move to a new provider.
We assume that Overstock.com will be taking over the registries for Bed Bath & Beyond, but Crate & Barrel is offering customers a chance to move their registries from Bed Bath & Beyond and Buy Buy Baby to them.
This is how you can transfer your registry if needed:
- Start a new Crate & Barrel or Crate & Kids registry.
- Take a screenshot of your registry from Bed Bath & Beyond or Buy Buy Baby. Bring to any Crate & Barrel store nationwide, or text us at 312-477-2326.
- Crate & Barrel will send you a unique 19-digit code for 20% off one item. Exclusions apply.
