Dollar Tree and Family Dollar tried living together, and it turns out they didn't like it. As announced on a March 26 company earnings call, Dollar Tree is officially selling off the Family Dollar side of the business, with the sale expected to go through in June 2025.

"Dollar Tree and Family Dollar are two different businesses with limited synergies" said Mike Creedon, CEO of Dollar Tree.

"Separating them will enable each banner to be led and managed by a dedicated team that can focus exclusively on that banner's distinct needs," Creedon added.

But that doesn't mean Family Dollar stores are going away — or that they're joining our list of stores closing this year. Once the deal goes through, Family Dollar stores (and many Dollar Tree and Family Dollar combo stores) will simply be under new ownership.

Here's everything we learned on the recent Dollar Tree earnings call, and what it means for Dollar Tree and Family Dollar shoppers.

As announced in March 2025, Dollar Tree is selling the Family Dollar side of the business.

These two discount retailers have been part of the same company since 2015, even sharing buildings in recent years to form Family Dollar/Dollar Tree combo stores, which you might have seen around your town.

But no more. Dollar Tree executives confirmed on a March 26 earnings call that Family Dollar is in the process of being sold to two private equity groups — Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management — for a purchase price of just over $1 billion, with the deal expected to close in June 2025.

But Family Dollar stores aren't closing — they're just transferring ownership.

Think of it like Bed Bath & Beyond getting bought by Overstock. The retailer you know as Family Dollar will still exist, but behind the scenes, there may be some changes as the new owners take over.

Say goodbye to the 1,000+ Dollar Tree and Family Dollar combo stores — they're getting split up in the deal.

If you live in a town with a population of 3,000 – 4,000, then chances are good that there's a Dollar Tree and Family Dollar combo store near you, per their website. These combo stores feature a mix of seasonal items from Dollar Tree within select Family Dollar locations.

But according to Dollar Tree executives, these combo stores will all get rebranded under the new deal.

"There are roughly 1,000 combo stores that will go to the new owner," said Dollar Tree CEO Mike Creedon. "Just under 60 [combo stores] ... will stay with Dollar Tree."

No details have been shared so far about where these locations are.

These combo stores have a mix of seasonal Dollar Tree items within select Family Dollar locations, with both names reflected on the storefront.

KCL TIP: Dollar Tree announced they were raising their prices to $1.25 back in 2021, but now we're noticing a few more prices creeping up to $1.50 and $1.75.

A Quick Refresher on How to Save at Family Dollar

1. Download the Family Dollar app to get Smart Coupons (aka digital manufacturer coupons).

The Family Dollar app (download for iOS / Android) is where you get access to Smart Coupons, which are typically manufacturer coupons. Just know that you can’t stack a Smart Coupon with a paper manufacturer coupon.

2. Stack Family Dollar store coupons with manufacturer coupons for more savings.

These store coupons are usually dollar-off coupons like “$5 off a $25 purchase,” and they work on purchases storewide, so you can stack them with Smart Coupons and manufacturer savings.

3. Combine Family Dollar Smart Coupons with rebate app offers.

You can also stack Smart Coupons with savings from cash-back rebate apps like Ibotta. Since you receive cash back after your purchase with the Ibotta app, it’s totally legit to stack those savings.

1. Use manufacturer coupons to get items for dirt cheap, possibly even free.

If you have a manufacturer coupon that’s for $1 or $1.50 off, you can get Dollar Tree items for pennies, or even free. Just make sure the product size qualifies based on the coupon fine print, since Dollar Tree items are often different sizes than what you’d find in a traditional store.

2. Shop Dollar Tree after a major holiday to get up to 50% savings.

Another way to get super cheap Dollar Tree stuff is to shop after a holiday. You can repurpose so much of what you buy, or save it for next year.

3. Dollar Tree now allows refunds for in-store returns.

The Dollar Tree return policy underwent some big changes in 2024, and now they allow in-store returns for a refund. Just make sure you have your original receipt in order to get your money back.

Online Dollar Tree purchases are still considered final.
