Late September is the best time to shop for Amazon Halloween costumes.

a person looking at amazon halloween costumes on their macbook

Similar to Amazon Halloween candy, youā€™ll find the lowest prices in late September. Letā€™s take this bestselling Ghostface costume ($28,13, Amazon) for example. Since different sizes have different prices, letā€™s look at the OSFA option. Last year, the price bottomed out at $23.55 on Sept. 21, before rocketing to its highest price ($41.98) on Oct. 21.

With this data in mind, donā€™t wait til the last minute to shop. Aside from the risk of your purchase not arriving on time, itā€™ll likely be more expensive.

Sorting low-to-high on Amazon isnā€™t the best way to find the lowest prices.

Amazon sellers sometimes list an item as costing less than a dollar so itā€™ll show up first when you sort low-to-high. That would be fine and dandy if the product actually cost less than a dollar ā€” but it rarely does.

Instead, the seller will jack up the price of shipping so they still make a profit. For example, this cape is listed as $0.19. But the shipping? Thatā€™s listed as $10.99 and isnā€™t eligible for Prime shipping or Amazonā€™s free shipping with orders of $25 or more. So really, the cape costs $11.18.

I find the easiest way to get around the misleading shipping costs is to filter by products eligible for Prime shipping. Even if you donā€™t have Prime, thereā€™s a lot of overlap between items that qualify for Prime and those that qualify for Amazon free shipping with $25 or more spent.

Expect to pay around $6 ā€“ $30 for kidsā€™ costumes and $15 ā€“ $50 for adults.

Okay so to be fair, the prices can go up to $100 if you want a really intricate officially licensed costume, but the VAST majority are actually less than $30.

For adult costumes, itā€™s important to note that not everything in the Halloween section is actually a costume. There are options that cost upwards of $100, but those are more for school mascots or cosplays. These products have a lot more detail than a Halloween costume, which is why they cost so much. Instead, the standard price range for a true Halloween costume is between $15 and $50.

Amazon has the lowest prices if you know how to look.

By comparison, Target sells kidsā€™ costumes for anywhere between $15 and $40, depending on the type. (Officially licensed Disney princess costumes can cost as much as $39.99, while a referee costume is only $15.) Target sells complete adult costumes for $25-$35.

Similarly, Walmart sells kidsā€™ costumes for anywhere between $10 and $40. Adult costumes usually start around $10 and can cost as much as $100 (though thatā€™s not common).

If you use the filters for Prime shipping, then sort low-to-high, and ignore any cosplay or mascot items, youā€™ll be able to find the lowest prices.
