1. Cut your wrapping paper to size.

Grab a roll of wrapping paper (thicker paper works best), roll it out, and cut to size according to the gift. Fold both sides into the middle, overlapping just a little, and tape along the whole edge. The more tape you use the better.

2. Create a base by folding and taping the bottom of the wrapping paper.

Fold up the bottom making sure the fold is large enough so that the base of your bag will be large enough for your item. This step will create the base that will support the gift — typically where the cardboard is in traditional gift bags.

3. Fold in the left and right edges.

Unfold the bottom so the inside of the paper can be seen. You’ll need to separate the wrapping paper to see it. You’ll have two triangles on either side.

Fold the left and right edges in toward each other. Turn over the top and bottom edges so they meet in the middle.

4. Tape the opening closed.

Once the sides are formed, it’s time to make sure it doesn’t fall apart. Secure the outside of each fold well with tape. Double-sided tape placed inside of the paper would work well here.

5. Close the top and decorate your new gift bag.

The hard part is over. Stand the bag up, insert the gift, and tape the top edge. Decorate it by adding a bow or secure it with a candy cane.
