Here’s a little fact for ya: the average U.S. family does 300 loads of laundry a year. Each load typically takes an ounce or more of liquid detergent or one to three laundry pacs, so each load can cost upwards of $1.20 (based on the prices below). If those stats sound about right for washing your household’s clothes, some quick math tells you that you spend around $360 on laundry detergent each year. And that’s without any of the additives.
Now, if you’ve got cash to spare, this article might strictly satisfy your curiosity. But if you want to know how to cut that cost in half (or more), it’s actually not hard to do. Laundry detergent is such a competitive market that we see discounts almost constantly. Each brand runs sales, promotions, and coupons in hopes of convincing you to try their product. Make your whole strategy shopping around those sales and you stand to save a lot.
Download The Krazy Coupon Lady app to get money-saving hacks sent straight to your phone.
We calculated the following figures using one ounce/one pod per load. Amount of detergent needed will vary based on factors such as the type of washing machine you use, how dirty the clothes are, size of the load, and water hardness.
1. To find the cheapest laundry detergent, always calculate cost per load.
In order to compare cost of laundry detergents, leveling the playing field between concentrated and regular liquids, pacs and powders, we have to first calculate cost per load.
To calculate cost per load, take the price of the package ($11.99) and divide by the total pacs of loads (40 loads). Going with the aforementioned price, it’s $11.99/40= 0.30. This means that detergent costs $0.30 per load.
Keep in mind this will be your cost for a small load of laundry. That’s because the instructions direct you to use multiple pacs or more liquid for medium to large loads.
2. When laundry detergent is on sale, the goal is $0.14 or less per load for conventional detergent.
And once you choose a brand, you still have choices: liquid, powder, pacs, or laundry sheets.
When I was a kid, my mom used powdered laundry detergent, but by the time I graduated high school, she’d graduated to liquid. And when my kids were babies, single laundry pacs didn’t yet exist. It wasn’t until they were older that I had the choice between liquid and pacs.
Here’s why there are so many choices now.
Big manufacturers in this space are always working to do three things: make better products, produce them more efficiently, and drive up your cost as much as the market will allow. The invention of the laundry detergent pac was the single biggest success in a long time in accomplishing these goals. In spite of the known dangers to small children ingesting pacs, many families have become accustomed to the convenience.
Because this article is primarily focused on saving money on laundry detergent, we have studied reviews and performance, tossing out low performers. We’re only including top brands here. Then we’ll rate and rank laundry detergents based on cost regardless of brand, pac, powder, or liquid. We’re also separating laundry detergents into three sections:
Conventional detergents — stock up at $0.14 or less per load
Cheap detergents — don’t bother unless at $0.10 or less per load
Natural detergents — aim for $0.20 or less per load
By shopping sales and using coupons, you can get more than half off the regular shelf prices at big-box stores.
3. The industry is moving toward more natural laundry detergents.
I can’t cover all the differences or complexities between natural and conventional laundry detergents in this article because it’s a lot of information. But essentially the complaints and issues all fall into one of two camps: harmful ingredients in the detergents and harmful ingredients in the fragrance. Ingredients in each detergent are available (though not easy) to find, and I’ll let you know which ones can be the most harmful, particularly those that are carcinogenic. Fragrance is another issue entirely and, as an unregulated industry, is not required to be shown on the listed ingredients.
More about the baddies.
The ingredients you may want avoid in conventional detergents are those that are harmful to humans and the environment. Ingredients like sulfates and phosphates are in thousands of household products. These have been linked to everything from cardiovascular disease to death. Nearly all conventional laundry detergents contain sulfates and phosphates.
Some laundry detergents also contain ingredients known as carcinogens. That means they have been highly correlated with or proven to cause cancer.
Benzene (listed as Dichlorobenzene (P-Dichlorobenzene/ Benzene)
Dioxane (listed as 1,4 Dioxane/ Diethylene Dioxide/ Diethylene Ether/ Dioxan)
Formaldehyde
We’ll review both conventional and natural detergents below.
4. Here’s the cheapest place to buy laundry detergent and the average cost for the top conventional brands:
In these next three sections, I’m going to break down the average cost per load for all major laundry brands. In as many cases as possible, these prices were pulled from Amazon, Target or Walmart. Expect to see higher shelf prices at other grocery or drugstores.
In addition to the everyday expected cost per load, I’ll share the strategies you can use to save on each brand, including subscription savings and where to find discounts.
Tide laundry detergent
Tide laundry detergent is the king, or around KCL we say “queen,” of the laundry industry. Sales volume, brand recognition, and ratings … whatever the metric, Tide tends to land on top. Just look at all the store brands that put their detergent in an orange bottle.
I’ll skip over any of the accolades and claims that Tide will make your clothes last longer. This is all about the nitty gritty details of how you save because you can’t be caught paying full price for this stuff.
Who has the best price on Tide laundry detergent?
The best place to buy Tide detergent is Target. The key is to take advantage of a promotion like “Buy 3, Get a $10 Target gift card” and use coupons to lower your out of pocket. Target gift card promotions are available nearly every week. Get the The Krazy Coupon Lady app or visit us online to find three coupons — one for each item you’re buying.
A typical promotion might look something like this:
Buy 3 laundry products that cost $10 each
Use a coupon for $1 off each product
Pay $27
Get a Target gift card worth $10
Final price is essentially $17, a savings of 45%
You’ll often have to mix and match laundry products for maximum savings, buying one bottle of Tide, one bottle of Downy fabric softener, and one bottle of Gain. Check out this week’s Target deals.
Amazon is the next best place to buy Tide. There you can find digital coupons with values of $2 or more. And always use Subscribe & Save to save an extra 15%, bringing the cost per load for liquid or pacs down to $0.17. My 3-month stock up is $0.14.
Pods
Tide Pods Ultra Oxi Laundry Detergent Pacs, 85 loads costs $27.24 ($0.32 per load) at Amazon
Subscribe and pay as low as $0.27 per load
Tide Pods Ultra Oxi Laundry Detergent Pacs, 85 loads costs $27.49 ($0.32 per load) at Target
Liquid
Tide Liquid Laundry Detergent, 64 loads costs $12.99 ($0.20 per load) at Target
Tide Liquid Laundry Detergent, 64 loads costs $12.97 ($0.20 per load) at Amazon
Subscribe and pay as low as $0.17 per load
Powder
Tide Original Powder Laundry Detergent, 113 loads costs $22.94 ($0.20 per load) at Walmart
Where can I find coupons for Tide laundry detergent?
You can print coupons every week at PGEveryday.com. And you can look for P&G digital rebates, such as Spend $50, Get $15 rebate. And finally, you can check for digital rebates for Tide in the Ibotta app.
If that seems like a lot (and it is), don't sweat. At KCL, we maintain a thorough coupon database where you can easily find all available Tide coupons and rebates or laundry detergent coupons anytime. (Download The Krazy Coupon Lady app and set alerts for Tide.)

Persil laundry detergent
Persil was actually the first commercially produced laundry detergent. It predates Tide by nearly 40 years. Persil launched in 1907, Tide in 1946. And that other P-letter detergent in the blue bottle came out in 1922. Basically, everybody before 1946 copied Persil, and nowadays, they're copying Tide.
Persil has a cult following of passionate users who will bet the house on Persil being the best detergent out there. And I'm not sure they're wrong. One bottle of Persil even bested Tide in a Consumer Reports test. (Persil took first, fifth, and sixth place. Tide took second, third, and fourth.) To debate the stain-fighting power of Persil vs Tide is probably splitting hairs. They both do a really good job.
Who has the best price on Persil laundry detergent?
The best place to buy Persil detergent is Amazon or Target. Both stores typically run identical pricing on Persil, but Target will release a gift card promotion once or twice a month. And when that happens, Amazon matches it.
Target also has Persil coupons in their app, and Amazon Subscribe & Save is available all the time to save you 15% on top of the promotion. These are the everyday prices:
Pacs
Persil Oxi Discs Laundry Detergent Pacs, 59 loads costs $19.47 ($0.33 per load) at Amazon.
Subscribe and pay as low as $0.28 per load
Liquid
Persil Laundry Detergent Liquid, 110 loads costs $25.99 ($0.24 per load) at Amazon
Subscribe and pay as low as $0.20 per load
Once you leverage the 15% Subscribe & Save discount, your cost per load drops to $0.28 per pac and $0.20 for liquid, which is the best price you can buy Persil at most times. And if you wait for a promotion, that's when you can start nearing that $0.14 per load stock-up price.
Where can I find coupons for Persil laundry detergent?
Persil regularly has coupons available. You'll find them in store apps like Target or Walgreens. And you can print coupons from home from sources like coupons.com. Plus, check here at KCL where we keep a list of active Persil coupons.
See this week's biggest Persil deals.
Gain laundry detergent
Gain is made by Proctor & Gamble, the same parent company as Tide. It's the second-best selling laundry detergent in the U.S. and known for its strong scent.
While Gain has good reviews, it rates very poorly in consumer tests. In fact, it's the worst performer of all the the conventional detergents on this list.
Who has the best price on Gain laundry detergent?
The best place to buy Gain detergent is at Target. Second-best place is Amazon. Because Gain is a sibling to Tide, most of the same rules for savings apply. The reason you shouldn't just go buy at Walmart is because Walmart doesn't run promotions. Target does. And often Target promotions can save you about 30%, then you add coupons to the mix and that's how you cut your price in half. Download The Krazy Coupon Lady app, and we'll do our best to make it easy!
Pacs
Gain flings! Laundry Detergent Pacs, 112 loads costs $27.49 ($0.24 per load) at Target
Liquid
Gain Original Scent HE Compatible Liquid Laundry Detergent, 61 loads costs $9.99 ($0.16 per load) at Target
Powder
Gain Original Powder Laundry Detergent, 167 loads costs $24.99 ($0.15 per load) at Target
Where can I find coupons for Gain laundry detergent?
Gain coupons are plentiful. There's rarely a reason to purchase Gain without one. You can print coupons every week at PGEveryday.com. Gain coupons can also be found in store apps like Dollar General, Walgreens, and Target.
And there are sometimes rebates for Gain as well. Look for P&G digital rebates, such as Spend $50, Get $15 rebate. And smaller digital rebates for Tide in the Ibotta app.
The easiest way to find all available coupons and rebates in the same place is to do a simple search on KCL for Gain coupons to find a comprehensive list.
See this week's biggest Gain deals.
Amazon Presto laundry detergent
Amazon makes laundry detergent under two brands: Presto and Amazon Basics (previously Solimo). Presto brand costs more and rates much higher, both in customer reviews and product tests. I file Amazon Basics brand under the cheap laundry detergents heading.
Pacs
Presto Laundry Detergent Pacs, 96 loads costs $20.24 ($0.21 per load)
Subscribe and pay as low as $0.18 per load
Liquid
Presto Concentrated Liquid Laundry Detergent, 110 loads costs $20.09 ($0.18 per load)
Subscribe and pay as low as $0.16 per load
The best way to save on Presto is to get the 15% discount when you agree to automatic reordering. If you're not familiar with the program and the discount, here's how Amazon Subscribe & Save works. It's the single greatest tool for shopping Amazon.
You'll save 15% (dropping the pacs to $0.18 per load) when you subscribe to any five items in the same month. Here is a list of our best Subscribe & Save deals so you can find others to add along with your detergent. And yes, if you have the room, you could just subscribe to five cartons of laundry pacs at once to get that 15% discount. Remember you can cancel Subscribe & Save anytime, including right after your first shipment.

All laundry detergent
All detergent is the second-lowest performer amongst conventional detergents. It fights stains much better than Gain but gets beat by Kirkland and Member's Mark store brands. However, before you write off All detergent, what if I told you that you could get it nearly for free?
KCL has posted deals that show how to get free All laundry detergent three times in the last eight weeks. All brand is the detergent you can buy for cheaper than any other name on this list, including the "cheap laundry detergents."
Who has the best price on All laundry detergent?
There are many good places to buy All. I recommend Amazon, Target, Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, Kroger, Dollar General, Family Dollar, or even Lowe's. My stock-up price for All Mighty Pacs is $0.14 or less per load, All liquid $0.06. Really, the only place you shouldn't buy All is Walmart. Even though the everyday price is low, Walmart doesn't run the kinds of promotions that are going to make this brand super affordable.
Aim for two savings elements in order to buy All. That might mean a promotion (Spend $25, Get $10 Walgreens cash) and some coupons or a Subscribe & Save discount, plus a digital coupon.
Pacs
All Mighty Pacs Free Clear Laundry Detergent Pacs, 60 loads costs $13.62 ($0.23 per load) at Amazon
Subscribe and pay as low as $0.24 per load
All Mighty Pacs Free Clear Laundry Detergent Pacs, 60 loads costs $17.89 ($0.30 per load) at Target
Liquid
All Free Clear Liquid Concentrated Laundry Concentrated Detergent, 94 loads costs $16.99 ($0.18 per load) at Target
Where can I find coupons for All laundry detergent?
All laundry coupons can be found in store apps like Walgreens, CVS, Target, Family Dollar, or Dollar General. Average coupon value is $1.50 - $2 off one, which is higher value than many other laundry detergent brands.
See this week's biggest All deals.
Costco laundry detergent
Kirkland laundry detergent at Costco is a great value, and reviews from shoppers and testers are both good.
One note on Costco prices: Costco.com always inflates the prices of their consumer packaged goods, like laundry detergent, so the online price is way higher than in store. For this review, I'm using the in-store price.
Liquid
Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean Liquid Laundry Detergent, 146 loads, costs $17.99 ($0.12 per load) in store only
Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean Liquid Laundry Detergent, 146 loads cost $21.99 ($0.15 per load)
Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean Free & Clear Liquid Laundry Detergent, 146 loads cost $19.99 ($0.14 per load)
Not only is the in-store price great, but it's fairly common to see instant savings above $3 off, which drops cost per load down to an incredible $0.09.
A Costco membership costs $60 per year, but nonmembers can shop Costco or Costco.com with a gift card. Not ready to commit to a membership yet? Check out these ways to shop at Costco before you buy a membership.
See this week's biggest Costco deals.
Sam's Club laundry detergent
Sam's Club is working hard to keep up with Costco in the laundry detergent arena. Their brand isn't reviewed quite as well, but the cost per load is near identical.
The one area where Sam's has Costco beat is that their laundry detergent price is also available online. Select store pickup to avoid any delivery fees.
Liquid
Member's Mark Ultimate Clean Liquid Laundry Detergent, 127 loads costs $15.98 ($0.12 per load)
A Sam's Club membership costs $45, but you can learn how to get a free membership.
And remember, if you're not a member, you can still shop Sam's and pay an extra 10% "handling fee" for every purchase.
See this week's biggest Sam's Club deals.
5. Here's the average cost for cheap laundry detergents
As we move into the lower end of the conventional laundry segment, you'll notice I'm less enthusiastic about the brands in this category. That's because in so many cases, the saving strategies we use at KCL actually work better on the top brands, effectively leveling the playing field. And if you can get Tide and Persil for the same price as the brands on this list, why wouldn't you choose Tide or Persil?
In this category, I don't buy at $0.12 per load. I'm looking for $0.06 per load or less.
Purex laundry detergent
Purex runs very competitive sales and promos that often make a compelling case to buy the brand. Many of these cheaper brands have chosen to, or been forced to due to production costs, sell their pacs at a much higher price than their liquid. Purex is the exception and one of the best options for low-priced pacs.
Who has the best price on Purex laundry detergent?
The best place to buy Purex is typically Walmart or Walgreens. However at Walgreens, you have to wait for a sale. The everyday price there is high, but occasionally the 29-load bottles go on sale for only $1.99. That makes the cost per load only $0.07, a penny off my $0.06 stock up price.
Pacs
Purex 4-in-1 Laundry Detergent Pacs, Mountain Breeze, 70 loads costs $9.47 ($0.13 per load) at Walmart
Liquid
Purex Plus Oxi Liquid Laundry Detergent, 85 loads costs $9.99 ($0.12 per load) at Target
Where can I find coupons for Purex laundry detergent?
Find Purex coupons in store apps, including Dollar General and Family Dollar. And check out the Ibotta app for Purex rebates. Coupon values for Purex usually land in the $1.50 - $2 range.
See this week's biggest Purex deals.
Arm & Hammer laundry detergent
You'll notice Arm & Hammer detergent isn't super promotion-driven, so at KCL we don't post a tremendous amount of Arm & Hammer deals.
Who has the best price on Arm & Hammer laundry detergent?
Since there aren't many sales, the best places to buy Arm & Hammer are the everyday low-price leaders, like Amazon and Walmart. Family Dollar and Walgreens will occasionally run sales, but make sure you're still looking at unit cost. Don't be fooled by Walgreens' Buy 1 Get 2 Free sale. The regular price of Arm & Hammer is so inflated that even during a Buy 1 Get 2 Free sale, the unit cost is still $0.10 per load for liquid. That doesn't meet my stock-up price.
Pacs
Arm & Hammer 5-in-1 Laundry Detergent Power Paks, 168 loads costs $31.40 ($0.20 per load) at Amazon
Subscribe and pay as low as $0.17 per load
Liquid
Arm & Hammer Liquid Laundry Detergent, 170 loads costs $13.98 ($0.08 per load) at Walmart
Where can I find coupons for Arm & Hammer laundry detergent?
Arm & Hammer doesn't usually do coupons in the Sunday paper or online, but you can find them from time to time in the Family Dollar or Walgreens app.
See if there are any Arm & Hammer coupons this week.
Tide Simply laundry detergent
Tide Simply is the budget brand with a big name. Reviews of the product confirm it does not perform at the same level as mainline Tide. However, it also doesn't cost nearly as much. If you're a Tide Simply shopper only because you're on a budget, once you convert to couponing, you'll be able to get the orange bottle for the price of the yellow one.
Who has the best price on Tide Simply laundry detergent?
Walmart is generally the best place to buy Tide Simply every day. But there are quite a number of options for where to shop Tide Simply sales, including Amazon, Target, and Walgreens. Keep in mind that the Tide Simply pacs cost significantly more than liquid for this brand. Aim for a stock up price of $0.09 per load with Tide Simply liquid.
Pacs
Tide Simply Oxi Pods, 55 loads costs $13.39 ($0.24 per load) at Amazon
Subscribe and pay as low as $0.20 per load
Tide Simply Oxi Pods, 55 loads costs $13.99 ($0.25 per load) at Target
Liquid
Tide Simply + Oxi Liquid Laundry Detergent, Refreshing Breeze, 74 loads costs $10.44 ($0.14 per load) at Walmart
Where can I find coupons for Tide Simply laundry detergent?
Find Tide Simply coupons in all the same places you would regular Tide coupons: PGEveryday.com and the Ibotta app. Plus, check out the Family Dollar app.
See this week's biggest Tide Simply deals.
Amazon Basics laundry detergent
The second Amazon brand on our list, Amazon Basics, is the cheaper of the two Amazon brands. While consumer reviews are pretty good, product testing reviews are mixed.
Pacs
Amazon Basics Free & Clear Laundry Detergent Pacs, 120 loads $21.78 ($0.18 per load)
Subscribe and pay as low as $0.15 per load
Liquid
Amazon Basics Liquid Laundry Detergent, Free & Clear, 110 loads $20.89 ($0.19 per load)
Subscribe and pay as low as $0.16 per load
Those prices might look pretty good, but don't forget that each item is also available for a 15% discount when you use Subscribe & Save. That drops cost per load to $0.15 for pacs and $0.16 for liquid.
In case you haven't tried it yet, here's how Amazon Subscribe & Save works. You can cancel Subscribe & Save anytime, including right after your first shipment.
See this week's biggest Amazon deals.
6. Here's the average cost for Natural Laundry Detergents
My stock-up price for natural laundry detergents is around $0.20 per load. There are so many factors in this decision; you may choose to adjust that number up or down for your family.
In this section, we introduce laundry detergent sheets, in addition to pacs and liquid.
Grove laundry detergent
Online retailer Grove.co sells natural cleaning products from name brands you'll recognize. They also have their own well-reviewed brand — Grove Co.
Who has the best price on Grove laundry detergent?
You can shop Grove Co. anytime and pay the standard list prices, which are admittedly pretty steep. Shipping is free for orders over $49, or over $29 for VIP members (annual cost is $19.99).
Note: Every order, including those from VIP members will be charged a $2.99 Supply Chain fee, regardless of order total.
You can save up to 15% on every order by subscribing to automatically reorder products every one, two, or three months. If you're scared of commitment, you can always change, skip, or even cancel your subscriptions.
You may still be thinking "looks too expensive," but there are more ways to save. When you first join Grove they'll load you up with free products. I'm talking three to five full-size freebies just for placing your first $20 order. And the free offers don't stop there. Grove almost always has a promo, like "free item with $20 or $30 purchase." Or they offer another full-size free item for downloading their app. Maybe it's $5 off if you pay with PayPal or $10 for referring a friend. You get the point. There are a lot of opportunities for additional value that make Grove a major player for those looking to save money on natural and environmentally responsible products. My first order from Grove is on its way now.
Sign up for Grove and start by entering your email. You'll receive confirmation of the free gift (with $20 purchase) in your inbox. Add a pack of laundry detergent sheets and another pack of liquid. You'll reach your $20 minimum to get all the free gifts.

Clean People laundry detergent
I placed my first order of Clean People laundry detergent sheets for the purpose of writing this article. Clean People sells laundry detergent sheetss in fragrance free or fresh scent.
I got the fresh scent and disliked it. It smelled similar to Febreze. And though I suspect it might have smelled good on my clothing after use, the smell was actually too strong to keep in my house. Luckily, Clean People guarantee everything 100%, and they even paid for my return shipping.
Also, how cool is this? For every 96-pack or larger of laundry detergent sheets sold, Clean People plants a tree in your name.
Who has the best price on Clean People laundry detergent?
Clean People brand is sold at CleanPeople.com and Amazon. The prices are identical at each place.

Seventh Generation laundry detergent
One of the biggest names in natural laundry detergent, Seventh Generation is the only brand getting included in many consumer testing reports. It doesn't clean as well as Persil or Tide, but you probably already knew that. For a natural brand, Seventh Generation has some of the best reviews.
Their parent company, Unilever, also makes brands like Dove, Vaseline, and others.
Who has the best price on Seventh Generation laundry detergent?
If you're not shopping with coupons, Amazon is gonna be your best place to buy Seventh Generation. This holds especially true if you're willing to subscribe to save that extra 15%.

Method laundry detergent
Here we have Method, which takes the crown for being the most discount-oriented natural brand. What I mean by that is, Method gives shoppers a lot of ways to find a good deal. If you quickly browse the Method deals page on KCL, you'll see we write about this brand more often than the other natural brands on this list. That isn't because we're playing favorites. It's because Method is actively using promotions, sales, and coupons to drive their business.
Who has the best price on Method laundry detergent?
My favorite places to buy Method are Walmart or Target. And I'm only ever shopping Walmart and Target if I have coupons. Target will even run promos like "Buy 2 Method items, Get a $5 gift card."
Without promos or coupons, Amazon remains queen, especially with Subscribe & Save.
Pods

Dreft laundry detergent
According to their parent company, Dreft is the top brand recommended by pediatricians and dermatologists for babies and the bestselling baby detergent among moms.
Who has the best price on Dreft laundry detergent?
In absence of a great coupon stack opportunity, Amazon is the best place to buy Dreft every day.
But CVS comes to play on occasion and, when they do, blows Amazon's price out of the water. Recently, Dreft was a qualifying item in a Spend $30, Get $10 promotion at CVS, and there was a $3 off Dreft coupon in the CVS app. It ended up making the Dreft just $0.11 per load. Download The Krazy Coupon Lady app, and we'll make sure you don't miss out on those amazing deals when they happen.

Tide PurClean laundry detergent
Tide PurClean is really more of a hybrid detergent than a fully natural one. About 75% of its ingredients are plant-based; some of the rest are petroleum based. Most of the other brands on this list are at least 95% plant-derived.
However, Tide PurClean outperforms just about every other detergent in the natural category. It's a really great option if you're tip-toeing into the natural detergent space for the first time.

Ecos laundry detergent
The Ecos brand story about their immigrant founder is so cool it was made into a movie, A Green Story. Ecos is a 100% carbon-neutral company as of 2013 and water neutral as of 2016. This female CEO-led company elected to set a $17 minimum wage back in 2014, and they have a true zero-waste policy. Even with all of this groundbreaking work, Ecos is consistently the best-priced natural detergent on the market. In product testing, Ecos tends to be a low performer, but I'm still tempted to try it just based on how great this company seems.
Who has the best price on Ecos laundry detergent?
I like Amazon for Ecos detergent. Ecos is a very low-cost natural detergent, so there aren't a tremendous amount of sales, promotions, or coupons.
