Once upon a time, in a land called Hobby Lobby, there was an actual, usable, and totally consistent 40% off one regular-priced item coupon. Seriously, this thing was a weekly staple in the store ad. While Hobby Lobby deals are still readily available, this coupon is not. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any Hobby Lobby coupons these days.

Why the heck did the ‘Lob do away with such a beloved coupon? Well, there are a couple theories, which we’ll get into in a sec. In a nutshell Hobby Lobby says they decided to focus on lowering prices across the whole store instead of offering customers that Hobby Lobby 40 off coupon. And if you’re familiar with the Hobby Lobby sale schedule, then you know there are still plenty of ways to save.

Oh, but if you compare Hobby Lobby vs. Michaels vs. Joann and try to use one of the competitor’s coupons, think again. HL will turn those coupons down in a flash. Sigh — foiled again.

Let’s dig into all of the whats, whys, and hows of a Hobby Lobby coupon, 40 off or otherwise. And for smart shopping hacks, text HACKS to 57299.

Does Hobby Lobby have coupons?

Not really, at least not in any meaningful way. In 2021, the Hobby Lobby 40% off coupon became a thing they just don’t do anymore. Previously you could find that coupon regularly in the store’s weekly ad, both in-print and online. But once Hobby Lobby made the decision to remove that particular coupon, it’s been rare to find any others.

Why did Hobby Lobby remove their 40% off coupon?

Well, do you want the press release version or the cold, hard truth? If you ask Hobby Lobby, they’ll tell you they nixed the coupon in an effort to discount more items throughout the store, broadly lowering everyday prices. They say this is to actually provide more savings to their customers. As in more than that 40% off a single regular-priced item coupon ever could.

But there are actually legalities involved.

There’s really more of a legal reason behind the coupon’s removal that dates back to a class action lawsuit involving Hobby Lobby furniture sales. The aforementioned Hobby Lobby 40% off coupon stated it was only valid on regular-priced merchandise. However, there are many departments across the store that have the sign “Always X% Off.” For example, furniture is always 30% off at Hobby Lobby.

The lawsuit argued that if something is “always 30% off,” then that’s actually its “regular” price. In turn, the suit said customers should, in fact, be allowed to use the coupon on furniture and anything else that is always a specific percentage-off.

When Hobby Lobby settled this lawsuit, the retailer was required to discontinue use of that 40% off coupon in its then-current form with 45 days of the settlement. Hence why the coupon went adios.

So, is the Hobby Lobby coupon ever going to come back?

It could, but with different verbiage on it. But if you take a look at checkout on the Hobby Lobby website, there's no place to enter a promo code. That feels telling, in that the coupon isn't likely to make a comeback. Or if it does it would only be available for use in-store.

How do you get coupons for Hobby Lobby?

Sorry, friends. You just don't. There are currently no Hobby Lobby coupons. That's why it is more important than ever to follow their sale schedule so you continue to never pay full price.

But HobbyLobby.com often has free shipping on Sundays, isn't there a coupon for that?

If you shop HobbyLobby.com, you can get free shipping on orders $50+ on Sundays, likely because the physical stores are closed that day. However, that free shipping will be automatically applied at checkout assuming you've met the $50 free ship minimum and everything in your order applies (you'll still have to pay shipping on furniture and oversized items). A coupon isn't needed.

You can still save 40% (or more!) at Hobby Lobby — here's how.

After being the bearer of bad coupon news (we hate that), we still have tons of hacks on how to save at Hobby Lobby.

Keep these two very quick pieces of advice in mind:

  • Follow the Hobby Lobby sale schedule to know what is on sale when — the store literally rotates through their departments weekly putting them on sale at percentage-off discounts up to 50%.

  • Holiday merchandise, like Easter clearance and Christmas clearance, typically hits 66% off the day after the holiday, then proceeds to 75% off that Thursday before reaching the max of 90% off the following week.
