Ready to spruce up the yard but not ready to shell out big bucks? We’ve found a few ways you can get trees and mulch for free. One of the easiest ways to get 10 free trees (okay, saplings) is to become a member of the largest nonprofit tree-planting organization, Arbor Day Foundation. It costs just $10 to join.

And perhaps there’s no better time than during the week of Earth Day on April 22 and Arbor Day on April 26, 2024 to make your space a little greener. This is when we celebrate conservationism and protecting our planet.

Keep reading to get the details on how you can get your free trees from the Arbor Day Foundation.

An Arbor Day Foundation membership helps support the tree-planting and advocacy efforts of the organization. It comes with 10 free trees, plus two flowering bushes (with a minimum $10 donation).

The Arbor Day Foundation offers Spring (April – May) and Fall (Nov. – Dec.) shipping based on your hardiness zone. Where you live and when you sign up for your free trees will determine when your saplings ship out.

Enter your zip code to select from trees that will thrive in your climate.

On the sign-up page, you’ll enter your zip code before you can choose the types of trees you want. These types vary based on where you live.

For example, a Boise, Idaho zip code offers 10 River Birch trees, while a Northwest Georgia zip code doesn’t offer that. But the Georgia zip code offers 10 Eastern Red Cedar trees (and the Boise area doesn’t). Some other categories that tend to pop up include:

  • 10 Flowering Trees

  • 10 Autumn Classics

  • 10 Wildbird Garden Trees

  • 10 Oak Trees

  • 10 Tree Mix

Don’t want or need 10 trees on your property? Have them planted in a rainforest.

While you can choose to get a membership with “no trees shipped,” there are better options! Members can choose to have 10 trees planted in a rainforest or 10 trees planted in a deforested area in the U.S. You can also sign up for the 10 free trees membership and have your trees sent to someone else to plant.

Wait for the trees to arrive, but get access to other perks right away.

Based on where you live and the tree planting schedule, your trees could arrive in weeks or months — but there’s a handy guide to help you know when to expect your trees.

In the meantime, membership comes with some additional perks.

Besides the 10 free trees, members receive The Tree Book, which has more than 500 pages of information and photos about tree planting and care. They also receive the Arbor Day newsletter and discounts on more than 100 varieties of trees.

Plant your seedlings when they come.

Yes, these are actual trees — seedlings. The National Arbor Day Foundation ships trees based on optimum planting seasons in your region, so once the saplings arrive, they’re ready to go in the ground. The seedlings come with planting instructions, so you’ll be adequately prepared.
